Fin rot?

I am getting the impression that one of my clowns has fin rot on his top fin above his back. Can anyone send me pics as to what exactly fin rot looks like and how to treat it? Thanks.

It would better if you just posted pictures of what you have so we can see. There is different ways to treat depending on if it is a bacterial or fungal. I suggest some good antibiotics available thru your LFS and check your water conditions

Alright Ill try and get a photo, the thing is extremely active so itll be hard but with a little "semper fi" try I think I can do it. LOL.

When I give it a medicine can I give it to him directly into the reef tank hes in?

Do a Google image search for "fin rot" and you should get the images you are looking for. I would remove the clown to QT and medicate it there.

I wish my camera didnt break....The pointed part of the upper fin looks like it was "shaven down, and the area that is still noticable as a fin, but not normal is now brown. It actually looks like something small was crawling out of the fin. Only until today did I notice it was slowly disappearing.

Is fin rot caused by a parasite? What medicine should I use?

THanks. Lou.

I have never seen a parasite cause fin rot but anything is possible. For fin rot I use either Maracyn or Maracyn 2. Maracyn is for gram positive bacterial infections, whereas Maracyn 2 is for gram negative bacterial infections. Unfortunately, you won't know which kind of bacteria is causing the fin rot. Because of this, if the fin rot is severe I use both Maracyn and Maracyn 2 in combination. Be sure to use it for the proper amount of days, otherwise you may end up with antibiotic resistant bacteria that will be even harder to cure.
