Finally! A dead-silent return pump

I have a 55-gallon, and have been on a mission from the gods to 1) reduce energy usage, and 2) make my tank as silent as possible.

I read and re-read threads here on RC from people searching for similar, but it was clear early on that what people considered "dead silent" usually wasn't. It's not just the noise, either -- vibrations can be just as annoying to me. I tried what everyone suggested -- mousepads, styrofoam, noise deadening rubber, you name it. I worked to make sure that as little tubing and chords touched the sides of the sump, to keep those vibrations from amplifying. I tried several return pumps people claimed were silent, such as the Eheims and Sicce Syncra "Silent" (ha ha!). The Poseidon/Velocity/Laing models got great reviews in older threads (especially by James77, who appears to be as noise sensitive as I am), but they weren't around anymore. Red Dragon pumps are crazy expensive.

I was set to try the Laguna Max-Flo (also great reviews), despite higher power usage for my needs when I began seeing the odd mention of the Waveline DC-5000. That one generated too much flow for my 55, and at 40w sucked more energy than my Sicce 3.0 (~32 watts). But then I found that Waveline had a smaller pump out, the DC-3000, at 25 watts per specs, and supposedly dead silent. And at $140, I wouldn't break the bank trying it out.

So I just installed it, and it's PERFECTION. More flow than my Sicce, and it's so quiet I literally spent five minutes trying to figure out why it wasn't working. It was, it just made zero noise AND no vibrations. And the energy consumption at full power came in at 24 watts, a tad below spec. You can dial it down. At setting 3 of 5, the pump was drawing 17 watts. Too bad I can't measure GPHs so I couldn't say objectively how much flow was lost at that setting. I'm keeping mine at full power.

It even has a great cone-shaped adapter for the return line, which simply slid in until it was on snug. On my Sicce, I had to cut a notch on the side of the return line and heat it up to make it pliable enough to (after much sweating and cursing crouched under the tank) slide it on.

If only my skimmer was as silent, I'd be in heaven!

p.s. Any manufacturer that claims their gear is "silent" should be required to include dB info in the specs.

Good to know but my sicce syncra is dead silent. It is the 1.5 though and I've heard the 3s and above are loud. Loudest thing on my new tank will be my ATI fixture. That's saying something too as my fans are super quiet

^ It is even still 6-speed programable which would be interesting to be able to tune your skimmer like that...

Awesome post!! I also have a 55 and its on the wall 3ft away from the foot of my bed! I'm also on the eternal quest for silence! Ill be ordering mine ASAP!

Saving this for future reference. Our 100 gal tank sits just 3 feet from the couch and the constant humming, vibrating, whooshing, swooshing, blurbling, glugging, clicking, etc. drives me crazy!

So last night I did a follow up noise "test". The kids were in bed. Neither the fridge (in the next room) nor the heat were running. I unplugged my Radion (fans) and Vortech MP10 (which even in night mode makes a small hum), and turned off my skimmer.

In a dead-silent environment, I could hear the slightest of hums coming from the pump. So not technically 100 percent DEAD silent. Above I said there are five speed settings on the pump. There are actually six. If I turn it down two notches, the sound is completely gone. Truly dead silent at that point. Again, I wish I had a way to measure GPH to see if that setting was enough for my tank.

In any case, even the Radion fans in whisper-quiet night mode (they run 24/7 to keep dust off the light internals) was enough to drown out the pump noise, and that's before I turned on the MP10 and skimmer and added the overflow noise on top of that. So still, a major drop in overall tank noise. And as noise sensitive as I am, I'm still sticking with the highest pump setting. I just can't hear it above the remaining tank noise.

I got mine from Salty Supply. No complaints. Them and Aquarium Specialty appears to be the only online U.S. retailers.

Okay salty supply is where I have been looking. thanks for the the feedback. I think it would be really cool if you could possibly post a video of the pump running. If thats not too much of a hassle. ;)

Glad you found something that works for you. Love my Sicce 3.0 though and I can't sleep if the ceiling fan 3 rooms away has the slightest wobble :).

Can you comment on what you think about this youtube video of the DC5000?

He doesn't think it's very quiet at all. From the video it sounds pretty loud, but he IS using a DC5000 not a DC3000.

I'm looking to replace my eheim 1260, which I think is just a touch too loud. Would be great to hear what you think.

Did you try a waterblaster? Mine is pretty quiet.

My Water Blaster HY-5000 return pump is VERY quiet too. And so is my Bubble Blaster on my SRO 300int skimmer. Other than my 2 MP40's, the next loudest thing is the air intake on my skimmer. I put it towards the back of the stand and with the doors closed I can only hear the MP40's....
Water Blaster & Bubble Blaster get my vote every time!

Edit: My Chiller is loud when it comes on too!
