Finally starting my tank 46g

Well here is my 46gallon bow front perfecto tank. Got a few pieces of live rock from ZQ. I ordered a remora skimmer for the tank.

Currently its just 3x 36" NO flourescent bulbs. Will be adding T5's soon. I have one maxijet 1200, and 2 HOB filters on the tank currently for flow. One HOB at least will be removed for the skimmer. How much additional flow will I need?

Anyone know if these small clams or mussels will stay on the rock or just die off?

Thanks,

the amount of flow you need will depend on what you have. but you may want to look into getting several MJ900's and doing the mod on them. the 1200's draw alot more watts than the 900's, but dont give you that much more flow.

even better, look into the new tunze nanostreams. they are great!

ZQ's liverock IME is dead for the most part. looks like you may have some sponges. you should be able to tell if the bi-valves are alive by tapping on them to see if they close up. some make it, some dont.

make sure to get a clean up crew in there to take care of any die off from the rocks.

NANOSTREAMS rock!!! Come look at my 6025 if you want. I am also ordering 2 6055's with controllers, but they are fairly expensive. All depends on what you want to spend, the nanostreams would be the best solution, a litlle expensive but well worth it in the long run.

I had gulf rock in my 10gallon nano back in FL, that was some awesome rock. I just needed something to get started. I'll add more when they get some fresh stuff.

Where did you get your nanostreams, the small one looks about $62 or so from premium aquatics. I'd like to check them out sometime. Do you have any time friday afternoon?

Thanks,
John

Doesn't really matter where you buy the Tunze stuff because of their price fixing. Retailers can't really sell their stuff at a discount. I've never seen more than a dollar or so difference on their stuff. Just go with whomever has them in stock and has cheap shipping. I'm definitely around friday afternoon, the earlier the better. (I have to be at work at midnight and need at least a couple hours of sleep.) I will pm you with my phone number, give me a call if you wanna check it out. They are cool as hell.

Thanks for showing off your tanks and the nanostream. Looks prety cool. Still I need to decide cost wise what to go with I suppose. I'll keep those in mind.

Does anyone run over the top closed loops a tank this size? Maybe with a mag or something similar? Just curious

Any advice on the T5's would be appreciated as well. I'm told icecap may not give the best bulb life for me. I'm looking to keep the tank somewhat efficient power and heat wise.

Thanks again for all the help.
John

unless you have one cheap, it'll cost more and provided less flow, and cost more per month in electricity than a nanostream. only reason i would consider a closed loop is if i *really* cared about getting all equipment out of the tank, or was going to do an oceansmotion to alternate the flow out of multiple outlets. otherwise the flow per watt sucks way too much compared to a propeller pump. i have a mjmodded 900 that someone loaned me that might be for sale. you are welcome to try it, and if you like it we can contact him to see if he wants to sell it.

Well I guess that makes since on the closed loop. The pump in the tank doesn't really bother me. Just looking at costs.
I'd be interested in checking out the mjmod sometime. That I guess would cost a bit less than a nanostream. They also seem to claim more gph than a nanostream.
Thanks
John
