I got some scarlet hermits a couple weeks ago, and they were big guys! I have blue hermits, and they were what I thought were normal sized - little guys, with little legs poking out of the shells.
These scarlets though were massive, to me. I had 5, and I don't see them very much anymore, but I'll catch a couple walking around a day.
Yesterday I noticed a claw on the ground near one of them. I picked up the shell, and he was in there, and looked alive. Today, the shell is gone, so I assume once the lights kicked in he was healthy enough to move and hide for the day.
Then I saw a leg on the other side, and a hermit near it! I picked him up and put him on a rock, and he came out of his shell, looking fine. I went to get food, came back, and he was gone - so again, I assume he's alright too, and went to hide for the day.
Is this normal? Do hermits molt like other crabs?
