Finding Nutramar Ova Locally

MondoBongo

Obligate Feeder Obsessed
hey all,

does anyone know where i can get Nutramar Ova locally? i called about 6 aquarium stores in the Pittsburgh area last night, the usual suspects, and most had not even heard of it.

one said they order it on occasion, but usually only every few months.

i wanted to try to get it local due to the cost for shipping and need for someone to get it in to a freezer fairly soon after arrival while i try it out to see if my fish like it enough to order multiple packages.

thanks!

thanks Ellie, that was going to be plan B.

i haven't met any of the other locals yet, so i figured it might be tough to coordinate and order for the first time, but perhaps there's no time like the present. :)

so i wanted to bump this with an update.

i did order 7 of the 100 gram flat packs from marine depot to try this stuff out. shipped overnight frozen for $80.36 total. so about $11.50 per pack. really not too bad.

i've been melting about 1.5 - 2 tsp and mixing it up with a little coral smoothie and a few drops of Serra vitamins. at this rate, one of the 100 gram packs will probably last me about 10 days, give or take.

my clownfish like it, but prefer cyclop-eeze or their pellets. my yellow tang gobbles it down enthusiastically, but the best part is my green mandarin. she loves it. she wasn't quite sure what to make of it the first one or two feedings, but now when it hits the rocks she is all over it scarfing it down.

i'm not sure how many of you guys regularly shop at Oddball, but i was thinking if there is enough local interest in buying it regularly, maybe we could talk to them about carrying it. next time i go up there i am going to take them a couple teaspoons to try out.

until then, if anyone else is interested in giving this stuff a try, i would be happy to sell one or two of the flat packs for what i paid for them ($11.50 each after shipping) and then if your fish like it maybe next time we could do a group order.

Dr. Foster's and Smith had it for slightly cheaper than Marine Depot, but they were out of stock when i originally ordered (looks like it may be back in stock now). Marine Depot does offer discounts when you order multiple packs though, and from what i understand shipping should cost the same regardless of whether you order 1 or 10 of the packs.

So another Mandarin endorses Nutramar. Honestly, I've never heard of one that doesn't love it. I feed mine a piece about the size of a pea every morning, although he really gets enough pods hunting. Sometimes it will come out of the feeding tube in a clump and he'll scarf the whole thing right down.

i was beyond pleased when mine started munching on it. she's eaten cyclop-eeze, i've seen her pick at pellets, and she hunts pods all day long, but this is the first thing she's been enthusiastic about.

it took her a few feedings to figure it out, but now as soon as i shut off the pumps she pops up on the side of the tank where i always feed it. i've noticed during the day that the majority of her foraging also takes place on that side of the tank now, within proximity of the feeding station i put in for her.
