I bot a large fingerleather for my 180 gallon tank - placed in the middle of the tank - 2 400w MH lights - all water parameters normal - finger was fully expanded in the LFS but after 2 weeks in the tank has not really opened much - water temp is high - 85-88 degrees - am adding a chiller this week - could that be the reason?

This amount of heat can and will kill corals and other invertebrates in the tank. Also, it might not be used to the intense light, so you might be burning it. What are your water parameters? How much flow do you have?
Water paramaters are all solid and i have several powerheads creating lots of flow - when I first bot the leather it sat up tall on its stalk and now has flattened itself out - I had it very high in the tank directly under a 400 w MH - have moved it down to the bottom - could it be too much light?
