Finished Cycle now to deal with Algae

Today my nitrite dropped to 0. My Ammonia has been at zero and my Nitrate is 25. I have a good amount of algae everywhere but the substrate. What have you guys done in the past to eliminate the algae?

I would wait it out a little still. Let the algae take up the unwanted nutrients.

Not to hijack the thread but I think my nitrites are coming down as it is lighter then this morning. I have absolutely no algae because I haven't turned on any lights. What is a good size clean up crew with not much algae and no diatom yet but for when it is time to start one. I don't want to starve them and a good variety of glass and sand and different algae eaters would be good. I don't like astrea because they fall off. This is a 65gallon lots of rock. 2 turbos, 2 or three red leg hermits or is blue leg better. 3 cerith and 2 nassarious snails. And emerald crabs are the best these days???

I have had the lights on and I am paying for it now. I decided to run my 3 x 250w MH lamps because I wanted to watch the water temperature fluctuations as I have no experience with MH. My Ammonia and Nitrite are 0 and my Nitrate is between 10 and 25. No water changes, I am just riding it out. Problem is, I don't know how long to ride it out. What's the next step, big/small water change? Or get a CUC, what will be best for this algae?

When my nitrites hit zero I am doing a water change. I have been researching so much some say wait some go as high as 90-100% as the bacteria we have been building is mostly on the rock and not in the water column and since there is no live stock a great way reduce the initial nitrate spike is by a water change. I have just finished my water mixed up tonight. For when I am ready. I am doing about a 40%. After setting up many tanks that is not what I call a diatom bloom. That usually happens about 6 months after tank has been set up. But I am no expert by any means

I am sure people will need to know some basics maybe they know already. How long lights, are the bulbs new, RoDi?, filtration, skimmer online yet(I just turned my on last night but pulled the plug so it is not actually collecting). Did you use a shrimp or ammonia or just live rock etc.

I had the MH on for 6 hours a day and the four T5 1 hour before and after. Bulbs are used, the new bulbs, MH and T5, will be here march 1st. Yes RODI. Running socks and ruble in the sump. I have a skimmer that has been running non stop for a large chunk of the last 5-6 weeks. I used the SmartStart like you did, around the same time as you started yours. The difference between our approach is I immediately poured in enough ammonia chloride to raise the ammonia levels to 4 ppm. The ammonia has been 0 for a while and the nitrite had been 0 for a couple days.

I bet it was the used bulbs. The typical diatom is a brown dust covering rocks, sand glass, and can be blown off quickly with a turkey baster.

Time for some Mexican turbo snails, one per 20-30 gallons should suffice for that bit of green hair algae.

I'd probably water change 25-50% tops, then buy some turbos. They mow the green hair down in a week.

Those rocks must be leaching Po4. Try pulling as much to that GHA with your fingers as you can. You want to remove the unwanted nutrients without releasing Hem back into he water. The turbos will take care of the stuff you can't get to. Set your skimmer to skim very light colored skimmate.
