Ok will do.

Why does the stock return stick out so far into the tank? Any reason not to cut that middle piece of plastic to move the adjustable fan further back into the corner of the tank?

Hmm you guys lost me on this one? Adjustable fan? Are you referring to the pipe coming off the return pump?

I believe what he is referring to is the pipe coming out of the false wall...the one you can move for different flow direction.

Any update on the picture of the stock skimmer??

Yeah that's what I was talking about. I cut it shorter. No biggie.

I have my stock skimmer in the box but it's in my wife's car. I'll try to snap some pics for you tomorrow.

In regards to the pump, I've taken apart all the plumbing and put it all back together, and it still makes a humming/vibrating sound louder than I'd like. I've actually never had much luck with the suction cup feet on pumps ... they seem to just transfer all the vibration right to the glass.

I'm going to try some kind of padding and see what happens. Otherwise I'm off to find a new pump.

I can hear my stock pump vibrating from across the room. Can you guys??

I may end up re-plumbing the whole thing and using 2 separate smaller pumps - one for the main return and one for the fuge ...

My pump is quiet. I have no problems there. Did cutting that pipe shorter make much of a difference in the flow you're getting? Any stronger?

I only cut about 2 inches off so I don't think it affects the flow much.

What will affect the flow (and hopefully the noise!) is the Tunze Silence pump I just ordered. It pushes 634gph and is supposed to be silent. Basically a rebranded version of the Sicce Syncra Silent I think, and it looks like it should fit.

Since there is a high evaporation of water in this tank daily; the 475 return pump in my tank pumps almost to fast for the flow that comes back in. If I don't watch it constantly and keep in topped off: I come home to find my return pump sucking air. So I'd be curious when you get the 634 to know how that works. I've often thought of drilling or slicing more holes for the overflow to go back in quicker.

Anyone have any thoughts on that (drilling or slicing more holes)? Or is it just my tank that does that?

I dunno about that, I setup an auto-topoff system. I can't imagine a tank without one. Especially a small tank. Well worth the investment if you ask me!

What top off are you using. AND YES I agree, a top off is a must have. :)

Here's the pic; sorry it took me so long!

I'm using the Tunze Osmolator set-up in the return pump chamber. I used one for many years in my old aquarium and it served me well so why change now...

In regards to the stock return pump, mine seems to have quieted down some after running for about 3 days now. I'm still anxious to try to the Tunze Silence pump for increased flow and supposedly "silent" operation ...

2 questions for you guys...

What is the purpose of the black plastic "clip" that seemingly hooks on to the top of the black tray that holds the filter floss?

Also, the surface of my water is starting to look yucky. Do you guys have the water level in the main display area so high that it actually flows over and into chamber 1, or is the water level supposed to be such that the water just flows through the slots?

I don't seem to be getting any surface skimming as water below the surface just gets sucked through the slots, and the surface tension/film prevents water on the surface from being sucked through.

I'm tempted to use some wire cutters and snip off the thin black plastic above all the slots and turn it into a true surface skimmer. Or just use a dremel and cut it out so that the slots extend all the way to the top?

The idea would be that it would look like the JBJ Nano Cube modular surface skimmer like this. I imagine that cutting out every other slat would also help, as the space between the slats is quite small.

I was actually thinking about doing this last night...let me know if you do indeed do this. It seems like a pretty logical thing to do.

You first! :P

The sucky part is that the black plastic piece doesn't look like it's easily replaceable if you mess it up since it's siliconed to the false wall and side glass.

After giving it some more thought, rather than cutting out some of the slats, I think it would be best to cut out just the top section.

So here is what it looks like stock:

And I'm thinking of using a dremel to just cut out the top section so there is plenty of room for surface skimming like this:

Basically just have to drain some of the water and rig up something so all the shavings and pieces don't get all in the water.

Hmmm. Anyone messed with the "overflow" area or am I going to be the guinea pig? Anyone have any input or ideas on this?

I was reading a thread earlier on N-R where a guy cut every other slat out and said it worked great. The only downside was the bigger pieces that got through got caught in the skimmer intake. I guess it's 6 of one half dozen the other.

I decided to first cut out every other slat just because it's easy and only took 3 minutes. What a huge difference! I don't think I need to do anything else. Highly recommend this mod to everyone!

FANTASTIC, I've been having the same problem and was wondering what I could do about it. Seems the fuge stays full of water to point of overflowining in the back no how much you turn down the incoming pipe. I was also getting that scum on top..

I didn't mod the fuge return area, I have no problems with that. I think it's supposed to stay full and maintian a constant level. It's basically going to maintain the same level as your main display I think.

My bad; I misread, hmmmmmm still, I might give it a go on the fuge. I can't seem to get the flow in there adjusted. I turn it up, it almost overflows out the back, I turn it down, it flows really slow and I get gunk on the top of the water. I can't find that happy medium :eek1:
