Finz

I went to Finz in Tampa today. What a great store!!! Lots of quality fish and corals. I spoke to T.J. at the store. He was extremely knowledgeable about the livestock in the store and other stuff currently available. I will definitely do some business there.
Also stopped in Aqua Star Aquariums in Brandon and Aquarium Creations in Brandon. Both places looked as good as usual. Aqua Star my be one of the cleanest stores I've ever been in. And as usual, there's always someone available to help you at Aquarium Creations.
FAOIS if a GREAT store, but it is so far to battle traffic, so I am trying to find quality stores on this end of the world.

hey

hey

I wish you had told me you were going to tampa today lol I could have met you there to pick up the overflow.

MFLAMB , MY VERY GOOD FRIEND OWNS THAT PLACE IF U NEED ANYTHING U CAN SEE CHRIS(OWNER) TELLING WHAT U WORKING ON HE HAS OVER 30 YRS EXP IN THE BUSS, TELL HIM I SENT U.
THEY HAVE ALOT OF CUST WITH BIG TANKS,
WHAT TIME U WHERE THERE TODAY? I WAS THERE BOUT 5.

I second that MF.. Ive done some business there recently and I'm very satisfied. Plus, its right down the street from me. Two major advantages!

Hawk'...Their sps selection was minimal, but quality.
Carlos...Thanks, but I want to do business with a store that I don't have to have a "connection" to be treated well at. I'm going to be stocking a 390 with sps and lots of fairy and flasher wrasses and anthias. I'm making my judgment based on how I get treated just because I walked in their store, and what I believe about the quality of their stuff.

Bingo!!!! Bottom line to sales.

thxs mflamb I decided to deleted my post because fo what I have seen in past.

Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Reasonable prices, high end drygoods, hard to find corals and fish. They are not going to gouge you on price and are willing to deal.

Advanced Aquarist author recently gave the store high praise for his acquisition of a rare Candy Basslet (scroll down to bottom of article for FINZ reference) http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2006/10/fish

I agree the staff at FINZ is knowledgable and friendly but I feel the store needs some work. No offense, but the tanks always look dirty, the place just looks discheveled (sp?). A bunch of BIG fish that aren't that cool and not a wide enough variety of corals. I always drive from Dunedin to FINZ and it seems like a long trip for what's waiting for me, sorry. Some really rare stuff there on occasion, but not worth the trip for me most of the time. Right when they get shipments, Hell yeah, but after that, I'll wait. Just my 2 cents.

CMJRREEF I DO AGREE THE STORE LOOKS A LIL DOWN THEY ARE REMODELING THE STORE THIS YR. IF U GO TO MOST STORES DURING XMAS HOLIDAY TIME ALOT OF THEM DONT BRING MUCH IN CUZ ITS SLOW TIME. THEY GET THEIR STUFF WED THURS THEY ARE USUALLY GONE BY WEEKEND HE BRINGS IN WHAT MOST PPL
WONT, RARE STUFF.
MFLAMB, I WASNT TRYING TO GIVE U A "CONNECTION" MOST OF THE CUST THERE HAVE HUGE TANKS, IF U NEEDED SOME GOOD
ADVISE. THATS ALL. WE ALL KNOW U CAN AFFORD ANYTHING U WANT, THATS Y I DIDNT EVEN SAYS ANYTHING ABOUT DISCOUNTS.

RICAN...you missed my point. It has nothing to do with money. It has to do with someone getting better treatment because they know someone. I know about customer service...my shop is top shelf due to customer service. Every customer is a potential paycheck everytime they come into my shop, and they are all treated that way whether they want an oil change or an engine change. LFS should be that way...they WILL be that way if they want my business.

I was happy to see that they had posted some prices last time I was in there and I hope the trend continues. Lots of people here know that Finz (and before them Creative Oceans) had a habit of making 'deals' for people they knew. Which is great if you have an 'in' but really sucks for people newer to the area or new to the hobby. A few months ago I heard one salesperson quote 2 different prices for the same fish (to 2 different customers) within a span of 10 minutes.

MFLAMB, I AGREE WITH THAT ALL LFS SHALL BE LIKE THAT.

ANGELSIL, I HEARD THAT MYSELF A FEW TIMES I TOLD THEM BOUT IT. SO HOPEFULLY THEY'LL GET IT.

I had a similar experience. They didn’t seem to have a single price for an item I asked about because two people quoted different prices on the same visit. I actually found the item I purchased at another store (later) for 40% less than what I paid at FINZ. That's my fault for not educating myself as a consumer and I’ll just check prices before I buy next time.

Still, I was greeted by two very friendly individuals who were respectful and knowledgeable. They made me very comfortable and didn’t act aloof or distant at all. I was at another LFS before my last larger purchase and the sales guy was distant and more interested in his computer than answering my questions and selling me something. I was ready to drop a couple hundred dollars, but he didn’t seem to want my business so I left. Love the store, but...

I think everything should have a price on it. Some stores write the prices on the tank with the name of the fish/coral. I like it that way. Diane "gets into" fish and coral shopping, so I have to tell her to not show excitement about something until we know the price so it doesn't get marked up because they sense a sale.
One thing I decides to do it to take my fish ID book with me as I visit stores and write down the store name and fish price in a notebook as I find stuff I want to get an idea of local pricing.
