Firefish a shy fish?

I got a fire fish, it only came out its hole twice and once it sees someone walking by he go back.
Is this normal?

Very much so. Once it settles in and realizes that you are the bringer of food it will come out when you approach the tank.

They can definitely be shy. They won't come out if there is too much flow either, but this isnt a problem for most tanks. IMO they can be intimidated and picked on my larger more active fish as well.

If i get it a partner (another firefish) will it be less shy?
Yes, though don't expect to see them out all the time. I had a pair that would only come out occasionally when they were hungry. I'd often not see them for days b/c they would be hiding in the rocks.

I decided to feed my fish and i finally seen the little sucker. Will a Purple one pair with a normal one??

Yep, they're pretty shy. Also why I think they're jumpers, they get startled and decide the carpet is a good place to hide.

Yes, they are carpet surfers -- mine made it through eggcrate and got crispy-crittered on the eurobracing.

I got one about 2 months ago and I literally never saw it for a month. I thought it was dead for sure. It started coming out a little after a month, and for the last two weeks he is out almost all day. Just give it some time.

They are great jumpers, mine made it through a foot thick solid lead wall. Believe it

I'm thinking you over-engineered your walls.

I've got a pair that is out almost constantly, but I have a very peaceful tank. The only thing that gives them any grief is the Fridmani, and he has mellowed quite a bit, only pestering them on rare occasions. I think the key to seeing them is them not getting harassed by more boisterous fish.

As long as other fishes don't harass them and they get use to the tank, they'll hang out in front of the tank surfing the current provided by your powerheads (at least mines did.)

I hardly ever see mine. It usually stays in its bolt hole but will come out during feeding time. It can usually sense my presence tho. Everytime I sit and check out my tank, within 5 minutes, he comes out (I guess he thinks he'll get fed)

mine used to surf the flow too. he was always out until my sixline decided he didnt like him, then the clown joined in. sadly i dont have the firefish anymore.

in a dispaly take at work we had a pair that basically never hid.

i always found as long as nothing picks on them, or spooks them, the love hanging out. be it right near there bolt hole.
