I know firefish of the same species are normally not very compatible , but will a red and purple firefish / dartfish coexist in a peaceful 50 gallon tank ?
If I were to guess, I would say probably not. In the short run, yes, in the longer run, no. I know that will prompt everyone to provide anecdotal evidence to the contrary. Just make sure your time frame exceeds one year.
i had 5 fires in my 57g,three were the cheap red ones and two were purples.i never saw any aggression from them toward each other or toward the other species.this is only my experience from about one year together.

Agreed. Even the supposedly timid and agreeable zebra dartfish can sometimes present problems together. Other species are notorious for not mixing well (intra- and interspecifically).
