Can the Firmware on an Aquacontroller 1.5 (the purple-faced unit) be updated to Rev. 1.6? Can a AC-1.5 unit generate pager and alarm commands? What are the major differences between Rev 1.5 and 1.6?

No, version 1.5 is the last firmware release for the original AquaController. Version 1.5 does have support for AquaNotes, as well as support for paging.
Here are the new features of the AquaController II (version 1.6 of firmware) over the standard AquaController (1.5):
- flash memory
- battery low indicator
- power failure indicator
- membrane keypad
- digital calibration on all probes
