First Gig

So I get a text last night about 8:30 from my good buddy last night who was at the PETCO that's about 70 miles from here and says they have a green carpet anemone here, do you want me to pick it up for you? He sends me this pic and says it's on sale for $19.99! Of course I said to bring it home.

When he gets to my house, the gig had spit its insides out but had a porcelain crab hitch hiking...not a bad deal for $20. I put him in a bucket to separate him from everything he spit up and transferred him into my DT. In hind site I should have drip acclimated him, but I wanted to get him out of all that crud that was in the bag with him. Only my actinics were on by the time he got here so we got to watch him for about 20 minutes before the lights went out for the night.

Throughout the night, I checked on him and watched him inflate over the next 12 hours. His mouth was open about the size of a quarter and slowly closed up as the tentacles got longer...that was until my actinics came on for the day. Her deflated almost instantly and spit his guts out again. Here is a current pic of him in my tank. He is slowly starting to inflate again.

I didn't have any cipro on hand and being that is Sunday, there are no vet clinics open to get a prescription. I should have all the meds on hand but that's another story.

I have a QT up and running ready to transfer him into tomorrow after I can get the cipro (hopefully) or do you think I should I put him in there now without the meds?

I may be wrong but it looks like one of the "assorted" Haddoni instead of gigantea. Regardless of what type, good luck with it!

You may be right. It was marked as a gig but I didn't see any verrucae. I thought that it may have been stressed and therefore not visible...I'm far from being an expert.

Thanks all for the confirmation. Either way, I'm still happy to have one. Here is an updated pic. Its innards have retracted and its slowly inflating but it's mouth is still gaping open.

It needs time to acclimate to your tank. It can take weeks, but S.Haddoni are quite resilient, so it should pull through. As long as your water and lighting are good you will see daily improvements.

That's good news! I still plan on getting some cipro today and moving it over to a QT for treatment unless it would be more stressful for the nem.

can someone please tell me what is to do in a case like this. my anemone is doing the same thing with the open mouse and deflating. please tell me what you did and how was the outcome. thank you

Look,at the Cipro sticky. Need to QT and treat him.

The nem was real bad that following Monday, but I was able to get some cipro from a local vet (I showed her Minhs protocol thread) and was able to treat it. It has made a full recovery after expelling some "rat turds" the size of M&Ms and now resides back in my DT adjusting to its new surroundings. Here are several crappy cell phone pictures from the QT to the DT.

I had it on the right side of the tank but it moved to the center and is now behind the rocks on the right so I cant get an updated picture. I'm going to adjust the powerheads today in an effort to get it to move to the front again.

I normally have sand in the tank, but had to remove it due to an outbreak of dinoflagellata and took advantage to move the rock work around some...my BTAs were not happy to say the least. The sand will go back in the tank in a month or so after a really good washing.

Thanks to everyone who first off gave me the proper guidance in IDing this nem and also the people who took the time to do the write ups on treating nems. It helped me save this beautiful animal.

I wasn't planning on blasting it with a powerhead. I moved my powerheads higher in the tank to get a better flow of water. I could see where the dead spots were starting to build in the tank. The nem hasn't moved all day and appears to have opened up flatter.

i tried every vet in my area with no luck in getting the medication. they all said they did not work with anemones. some thought it was just to let it die. what a bummer these people. i bought some on ebay but it has been one week already and nothing. they took the funds though. but no medication. my anemone is very sick. did this medication work for yours?

Treat him for 7 days. He looks good.

He'll make it.

I tried several vets with no luck before I found one the one that gave me the prescription. If I had I had to order it online on that Monday, the nem wouldn't have made it. The vet I came in contact with did some research even checked with the Georgia aquarium and UGA before issuing it to me. If I had to do it all over again, I would have gotten some cipro and septra to have on hand before picking up the nem. One thing else you want to make sure of is to have plenty of salt on hand. A seven day treatment with a few days in fresh SW in a 10g QT will have you down a half bucket of salt. I hadn't planned for it, but got lucky and had a fresh bucket of salt on hand. The LFS by me do not carry the salt I use so I have to drive 2 hours to get it.

To answer your question, yes the meds did work and the nem is settling into my 100g tank.

I am glad you were able to save your anemone. 20 dollars for him and the crab was a great deal even if you have to treat him.

Yes it was a good deal. The crab was not a happy camper about his move over to my BTAs but has settled in nicely.
