First inverts list - what say?

you are absolutely right Devastator007 -

I think I may just go to a LFS instead and buy from them... i just wish they werent crazy expensive...

My emerald crab never bothers anyone but he is very well fed. He took over the biggest cave and I noticed no one but the hermits go in there now . He is by far the biggest critter in my tank though, so that's kind of his right as far as I'm concerned.
Edited to add: If you buy a little at a time from a LFS you can pick your specimens. I agree with whoever said they enjoy their cuc almost more than their fish.

I have a Porcelain Anemone Crab and it's one of my favorite tank inhabitants. There are a few things that make this dude seriously happy though. My tank was well established and could support Pods. I had a very healthy in tank Pod population. He is a filter feeder and loves fishing for those guys. I would suggest getting pods once your tank could support them and letting them grow for at least a few months. They are happier with an Anemone, but I have an Anemone type coral and he has attached himself to it. I had two crabs and the one that was loose wondering the tank never did very well and seemed lost all the time. The guy hosting the coral is still doing fantastic. I do hand feed him a bit of clam every now and then as well.

The Hosting ritual. When first introduced, it stood there with it's arms raised for about 20 min.

I know. A lot of worry for one crab, but like I said, I love the guy. He is an attention getter in the tank and is just so cool.

I get trying to save $ on shipping, but adding all of your clean up crew at once can be a bad thing if your tank can't support them. Especialy for a new tank, where there woun't be so much natural food for all of them to eat.

I agree. I believe in adding cuc over time as needed. Start small with some stuff your your sandbed, fighting conch & nassarius snails. Some ceriths & trochus for algae once it starts to show up. Then make adjustments over time as needed.

pigpen17 - thanks a bunch.

is that like PODS in a bottle that i can buy online? do i just pour that in a tank? how often?

and secondly - those pics are great man...

Yeah, those are the pods in the bottle. I personaly haven't used them though. I've heard some people breed them in a seperate bottle and add them occasionaly, though I think that is mainly for people with manderins and gobys that feed on pods. I know they're suposed to be valuable for your sand bed.

You may find also an added benifit to adding your CUC gradualy is you can customize it to your tanks needs. It's hard to find an exact formula for how much of what to get because everyone's tank is different and has different needs. If you notice you have a certain kind of algea growing you can add some CUC to target that, and your CUC will be specificaly tailored to your tank. You may find you don't need as much CUC as people say too, saving you money.

On emerald crabs, I have had one for maybe a month now and have not had a problem at all with him. I've read the "good kind" has red elbows, and there is a carnivorous kind that is bad which does not have red on the inside of it's elbows. For this reason, I would only buy one of them in person so I could make sure I am getting what I want. (picture of the red elbows)

If it's really an emerald crab "mithrax" it will have red in the elbow joints. If it doesn't have red then I wouldn't trust it to be an emerald crab. There may be some out there that are all green but it's not worth the gamble. Without the red I would consider it some other possibly carnivorous species. Save those for someone else.

Thanks. Everyone just loves that guy.

Yeah . The pods in a bottle, although I went with the mixed pods bag from reefcleaners. I believe they live off algae. I would research more info. My tank had a lot of growth, live rock, nothing that eats them, and had been running for about four months so my Pods thrived. Some people will grow them in their refugium.
