First large brittle star, what to feed!?

So I bought my first brittle star that is about the size of a nickel in the middle and from arm to arm roughly 7-8 inches. I've been putting extra pellets and flakes by him that he goes for but what else substantial should I feed him so he doesn't go after my shrimp or smaller fish? Silversides? Krill? Chopped up fish from the store?

Nope but just got him a few days ago. Just want to take precautions bc my shrimp is my favorite in the tank!

I never really fed mine...once in a while I'd toss some formula pellets down, just because they would sink to the sand.

Over the 10 years I had him...he did take down one of my favorite fish, a copperband that I had for over 5 years and was not showing any signs of illness. Mine died of what I would think is age, a few months back. I have no plans to replace it...

Nope it's a bright red one. I've been putting a ton of nls pellets down by him and flakes. The cleaner shrimp, keeps wandering to the brittle stars hangout and it's making me nervous lol

Never had or seen a bright red brittle, sounds excellent. Is it smooth or spiky? If smooth then it's a serpent star, spiky is brittle star, at least I think that is correct. I'm sure to be corrected if not.

I had some small greyish serpent stars (smooth ones) with bands on their arms once. They had to be removed as they ate anything they could ambush, including other starfish.

I have a dark reddish brown brittle (spiky) star and he is great, had him for 8 years. He mostly hides in the overflow box now since my coral banded shrimp developed a taste for brittle star arms. They catch drifting food in their arms and transfer it to their mouth like a conveyor belt using their tiny tube feet. Amazing creatures.
