The first one looks great but it's hard to tell what you are actually trying to take a picture of, the Ric or mushroom? I like the Ric below the first picture. The rest of 'em look a touch over exposed to me but the screen on my laptop sucks, so who knows. Which camera are you using?

The Canon PowerShot S2 is a fixed lens camera. Are you using it stock or have you added a lens to it?
The camera has an excellent ability for macro shots. Good choice in camera. Although, Blazer88 mentions 2 things you should keep in mind in your future shots.

1. The images (aside from the first) are a tad overexposed. This washes out the color and unless you intend that to be the effect, it doenst show off the corals very well. You usually find your eyes drawn to the overexposed regions of the image.

2. Keep in mind of what your subject (1st pic) is. Try to frame the image so the subject is in an interesting position. Have the rest of the image (background) compliment your subject to bring attention to what you want the viewer to be looking at.

When you look at other photos, try to understand what the photographer was using the surroundings to direct attention to the subject. One method is called "The Rule of Thirds". You can read more about it here.

This should help start you off on good composition. When you get that down, just do a search on google for "photography composition". You can work on exposure later. :)

I hope this doesnt come off as pretentious or anything like that. Just trying to offer some constructive critisism to help improve a fellow photographers skills. ;)

great info!

yes, this is a canon s2. i am not using a macro lense...just what came with the camera out of the box.

i have set the iso to the lowest setting and have turned the sharpness all the way down. i did this after reading an article on aquarium photography. how do i change the exposure so that the images aren't over exposed?

the first picture's subject was actually the orange ricordia. it is dead center in the original picture. ...but i cropped it this way because i thought it was an interesting arrangement with the other blue ric and poke-a-dot mushroom along with it. i'll keep the subject framing in mind and will try some more pics.

again, thanks for the input! i really want to learn how to use this camera to its full potential.

Look for the E/V adjustment. I normally set mine to -1.0 or -0.7. That will also make your shutter speed quicker which always helps.

I thought maybe he had added a 'helper' lens on his fixed mount macro-zoom.

I didn't notice the overexposure that you'll are 'seeing', teh exposure range could be expanded, seems like the midtones are a bit compressed.

Maybe it's just me ...
