First Maxima

I just bought my first clam... a Maxima. It is about 2.5" and it's color has not "colored" up yet. I think I read that this may take a little time. Yesterday was it's first full day in the tank. I used the guide on eastcoastclams.com for my acclimation procedure. I have it on the sand bed on a pvc ring I modified to sit the clam on. My lighting is 2 x 175W MH and 2 x 110W VHO's. My tank is a 75 and the distance from lights to the sand bed is about 22". I will be spot feeding it live phyto.

Does it sound like I'm doing everything correct here?

An update to my clam husbandry. I'm going to move it higher in the tank. I'm also going to use the 2 liter bottle trick to aid in feeding it the live phyto.

Actually, clams don't "color up" like SPS corals can. Clams are usually what you see is what you get. Occasionally a slightly bleached clam can recover some color, but that's about it.

Its pigmentation is getting brighter. I guess I should have expected it to take a few days after being shipped in the dark. Purple and blue, gotta love it. I decided to use the bowl feeding method, which seems to work out pretty good. I'm going to introduce it to a rock tonight. I will definitely have to snap some pics.

When I moved my clams from 400w halides to 55w pc's the brighter colored ones browned out within a couple weeks. Then after moving them back under the halides again they colord right back up in another couple weeks.

I would say it depends on what lighting the clam comes from. If it was at the LFS under insufficient light then there is a chance it could color up. However, since it is from an online vendor that keeps there clams under good lighting I don't think it's going to color up much. I REALLY don't think it is going to color up in 1 day. Their zooxanthellae doesn't reproduce fast enough for the human eye to notice a difference in such a small amount of time.

You could take a picture of the clam now and then another one in a couple weeks to see if it colored up.
