First post ... Filter questions!

OK ... first off hello! I've scanned the site from time to time, but never actually posted.

so here goes!

I have a 29 gallon tank recently converted to reef. Approx. 60lbs. of Live Rock, 3.5" - 4" sand bed. 2 x 65watt Orbit PC setup. 1 Perc. Clown and 1 Royal Gramma. Snails, Crabs and a few corals ... Candy Cane, Zoo's, Shrooms, GSP. and for in-tank flow I have 2 MaxiJet 900's.

My question is ... this was a fish only tank recently converted to reef. When I did that I removed the hood I had which was the Eclipse filtration/lighting system. after putting on my new lights I went with a HOB style filter that is now driving me crazy with Micro Bubbles.

I want to know .... with my current setup would it be wise to remove the HOB filter and go filterless all together? There is a possibilty I could run a HOB Refugium and/or a skimmer, but it has to be minimal cost!

Thanks,
JeRmZ

Skimmer should be a must, be careful of HOB units though, many are low quality. Also regular saltwater changes (RO/DI).

Oh yeah I do my water changes on pretty regular schedule I'm not really a new at this. I've had my tank running for over a year now with no problems at all.
Just recent;y switched over reef and had to ditch the "All in one" hood I had and decided to go with an HOB. Now I wish I wouldn't have. .

So If I run say an HOB refugium only with the amount of Live Rock I have should be sufficient filtration. If I can add say a CPR Bakpak skimmer to the mix that would be even better right?

The amount of LR you have is certainly a good biological filter. A fuge and skimmer would both also be a plus. IMO, if I had to choose between the two, I'd get a skimmer first. There are several HOB skimmers that would serve your 29g well. The Coralife Super Skimer (needle wheel) and Aqua-C Remora (spray injection) are a couple worth looking at.

OK cool, I will have to check them out and see.

I just can't stand the Micro Bubbles the HOB filter is putting into my tank.

Thanks Everyone!
