Hi everyone. Started marine fish keeping about 2 and a half months ago and this is my first post. Just had a few questions
1. Keeping different speceies of clowns together.
2. What are pin cushion sea urchins like as i have one in my reef tank.

I have not tried keeping different species of clown fish, and I have heard that they will fight alot. However I have seen it done before with no problems. What size tank do you have? I wouldn't even consider it unless you have a large tank 100 gal +.

I never liked the urchins, but some people have them. Just be careful in handling them. I have heard that there bristles can break off in your finger.

I agree w/bwayne315. I also heard the clowns will fight if not a matched pair.

Ditto for the urchins.

The thing is a someone was getting rid of there marine tank and i rescued a Black and white clown and urchin. The reason i asked about the clowns is that everyone i ask, they say that keeping clowns of different species is impossible. The clack and white is with my marron clown which is supposed to be the most aggressive clown and they get along fine. The tank is 47 gallons.

I always love to hear it's working. That's the thing, there isn't a rule that works for everyone. There are guideline and those make our lives alot easier. If you find that they are becoming stressed, your lfs will probably take him.

The nearest LFS to me that deals with marines is 20 miles away and just wanted to quickly add that i live in england.

I wish I could remember who to give proper credit to, but my favorite quote about this type of thing is, "The fish never read the books."

If those two clowns are getting along, then let them be. If they start to fight, you'll have to choose between the two and trap one out. Clowns are known to be brutally territorial, but if your tank has only been set up for only a couple of months and your Maroon is young maybe he just hasn't set up territory enough to have a problem with the other. Clowns don't tend to claim a big territory, so maybe you'll be lucky and they'll both just take spots on opposite ends of your tank.

I don't know about the pin cushion urchins. When my tank was new I had a LOT of black urchins as hitchhikers. Others convinced me to get them all out because they were supposed to eat coralline algae, which is desireable in a new tank. They did grow alarmingly fast, so I pulled them all out.

Now that my tank is 2 1/2 years old and keeping the coralline under control is the biggest pain I have, I sort of wish I had some urchins if they really do eat coralline. It would be my luck that they'd eat the coralline off of the rocks where I want it and not the sides of the tank where I don't.

Good Luck!

I agree that mixing different clown species should be with caution.
I do have a blue tuxedo urchin (pin cushion) in my 55 gallon fish only. It does an outstanding job cleaning algae, but it will eat your coraline. They are also venomous so you need to be very careful when your hands are in the tank. But on a positive note, they stay small, only topping off at about 3 inches in diameter.

Just wanted to say, [welcome]

Hopefully you will have luck with the Clowns, so far so good though right :) Lots of people with Reef tanks end up getting rid of their urchins for the simple fact that they eat corraline algae (as everyone has mentioned), and mostly off the rocks which isn't usually desirable. If you don't mind it though, don't worry about it.

Good Luck, and Happy Reefing.
