First Sps, looking for id and advice

Hello,

I just picked up my first sps yesterday. Wondering if i can get an id, and some advice on what to do about the dead base. The coral was in a pvc pipe at the lfs. The pvc was surrounding the bottom of the coral, so im assuming the tissue loss at the bas is from the lack of light/flow due to the pvc pipe? I didn't notice it untill i was at home. :mad2: Anyways, should i frag it up to the reamining tissue, or will the tissue eventually grow back? Here are some pictures. The coral is a teal color when viewed from above.

The coral is in indirect flow from a seio 620 that is about 10-12 inches away. Also, should i superglue it to the rock it's sitting on? What type of super glue gel? Any id's and suggestions will help.

Thanks,
Cory

Thanks, that's what i originally figured. I bought it hoping i was right, but when i went to pay, the Lfs employee asked if this was my first acropora. I just went along with it considering it's my first sps. I figured it wasn't though due to the fact it lacks the coralite chutes/definition that i typically see as characteristics of acro's. Can someone confirm stylo for me? I really was trying to stay away from acro's untill i figure out a way to prevent introducing AEFW's into my tank. Also, can someone suggest what to do for the base?

Thanks,
Cory

The piece looks pretty healthy overall, I'd give it a few days to acclimate fully. Then just frag away the dead base and glue it in place so it can encrust a healthy base again :)

I like Stylo too but I'm no expert. Could be a Pocci possibly :)

Here's another shot under actinics.

Sorry for the bad pictures. These are my first real attempts at tank photos.

Thanks for the replies,
Cory

Looks like a pocillipora. I prefer to glue corals with the superglue gel with the AquaMend 2 part epoxy method. A drop of gel on the rock, one on the end of the coral and the epoxy in the middle. HD sells AquaMend.

Yeah, I would say pocillipora, but whether it is poci or stylo, you keep it the same. Does not require super high light levels, does well in nutrient rich water, normally hardy. I would suggest letting it get accustomed to your tank then deciding whether you want to cut the bottom off. It may just encrust over all the dead/lost area and you will have the whole thing back.
