First tank test! Help!! does and donts. plz

Hello. Well i am going to test my tank for the first time. And i am just trying to make sure i dont do nothing wrong. Like the does and dont of testing your water. Just follow directions. It is pretty standard stuff. One piece of solid advise I'd give you is to get into the habit of taking your sample of tank water w/ a seperate container and then filling your test vial or whatever out of your container. This way you will not take any chances of contaminating your tank w/ the agents from you test kits.

For my planted tank, I got a little (10ml) syringe intended for giving babies liquid medicines. I use this to pull test water out of my HOB filter. The reagents never touch the syringe, so I know I'm not contaminating my tank water.
