First time with sun corals...

I cut a 2 liter Coke bottle, attach 3 steel fishing weights affixed to the inside to keep it down in the sand. I dig deep to keep the snails from burrowing under.
I drill a hole in the cap the size of a turkey baster, frozen Mysis go in incrementally.
Sun coral will close to eat/chew/enjoy the food, I then wait for them to open back up and repeat the process.
When they open again full when shrimp is gone, I blow air in Through the bottle in hopes that the mysis that fell to the sand, will stir up wards and get caught in the heads that are downward facing.
My Tang, a voracious eater, doesn't care for this at all, but he will eat all the shrimp if I don't use the "Cone Of Sustenance".
Suns are doing fine too.

One other method you can try is using a ping pong ball inside rather than the drilled coke cap.
Ping pong balls move out of the way allowing food in then floats back up to make the seal.

I don't lose much shrimp with the coke cap method, but the ping pong is a bit more "High Tech" and fun.

cone o sustenance priceless lol. i made a similar one for my tank. i also might have to get some suns soon. one of the lfs has some orange and some black ones, would be pretty cool to get them. do they stay open during the day any? or solely at night?

Hey there. I feed my sun coral mysis, brine and cyclopeeze. If you want to feed with cyclopeeze only, you should take a small container and put the sun coral in it to feed separately from the main tank. That way, your water quality wont suffer and your sun coral will have time to eat.

from monday to friday, i dont get morethan 15mints to feed my tank... i guess my plan is to soak cyclop and plankton in a small container with some tank water for 24hrs in refrigerator, then feed with turky buster... or feed via thistle funnel....

Hi I purchased a sun coral, dropped it, now it's skeleton is showing. Also it's heads haven't come out fully since I put it in the tank 3 days ago. Can someone give me a suggestion on dealing with the injury and coaxing it to eat. I've been using filter feeder food spot feeding. I'm planning on going to the fish store to pick up iodine and food, I'd appreciate suggestions on a shopping list to care for it. Thank you for your replies.

Hi Jen. I'm assuming by "now it's skeleton is showing" you mean that some of the (orange/yellow/pink) tissue was scraped off and you can now see the white skeleton. If you keep up with feedings and water quality remains high they tissue will regrow. If I misunderstood please post a picture of the damaged coral so we can see what you're seeing.

This thread will show you how to coax them eat and keep Suncoral thriving in your aquarium
