First Zoanthid Question

I just picked up this zoanthid at my LFS. It's my first Zoanthid along with my first coral in my tank. These are pretty solidly opened in the picture, however there are a few bulbs that aren't open.

I'm wondering if these are new growths that aren't able to open yet, or maybe some that did not adjust well to acclimation in my tank. I can't see any visible openings on them.

Nice looking zoas. Some just take longer than others to open up. give them time and enjoy. They should open up nicely.

Thanks for the answer and sorry about the size of that image. I figured it would be a good entry to corals and that small colorful piece was half the price of their large brown zoanthid rock colonies. Been having trouble finding anything with good color at LFSs

I agree with jjmg. Some zoa polyps are just more picky/stubborn than others. :p

Let us know if they stay closed up for too long (days) because that is a sign of some sort of problem.

Hope this helps!

Nice zoas. I used to have a colony like that. They colored up pretty nicely. Here is an old pic of them.

As for those other polyps. It can go either way. Keep a close eye on them hopefully you can nurse them back to health. Good luck.

Those sure are pretty! Anyone know the "name" for those? I think I would like to look for a frag somewhere . . . but I can't if I don't know the name of what I am looking for!

Craig, I don't know if you were told this or not but feeding DT's plankton will help a LOT. My first coral was zoas too. I was told that they only need light when I first got them. I had two heads die and the rest were fine with just light. Once I started feeding DT's and cyclopeeze I have had a great amount of growth. My blue zoas are still very slow at growing but the watermelon zoas are taking off like a wildfire. Prior to feeding the zoas I didn't have any growth. Your new zoas are looking very nice so far though!

I'd read mixed reviews on that, when I bought them they said just stick to light, feed only if theres a problem. I think I'll go ahead and just start doing it though.

Any tip on time of day to feed?

You were right, they are starting to open. I'm pleasantly surprised too. These look different, their centers are a neon orange instead of a neon green.

me too

me too

i just started dabbling with zoas, and find that some just take a little longer to open. Generally there seems to be a difference in the polyps that explains it.
