Firts SPS, what to look for?

I got my first SPS today. It an orange monti cap. What types of signs should I look for that it's in trouble. Or conversely, what signs would point to it's good health?

If it retains its color and shows polyp extension it should be fine. Look for a white outer edge to signal new growth.

The first thing to look for is the SPS section instead of the soft coral section :D

Seriously though. Cap's are not too light needy. Best bet is to always attempt to duplicate flow/location/light from the previous owner's tank. You can then adapt and move it to your preferred location.

Watch for any loss of color, tissue recession, etc. As well, SPS are very finicky when it comes to water parameters. Double check your ALK/CALC quick to ensure they are in line.

If it shows signs of white coloration(tissue loss) then it is bleaching normally due to too much light or acclimation was to fast.
A good water flow will bring food and oxygen to it and remove detritus and carbon dioxide as well!
They will grow very large so be careful as to the placement in your tank with surrounding corals. They don't have a strong toxin as far as chemical warfare is concerned but will become injured or die if another coral comes into contact with it...
