Fish agression. :(

I have a beautiful adult flame angel that a friend gave up because it was going after his clowns.

It's leaving my clown fish alone, but it's going after fish his same size. It's primarily driving my Swallowtale angel nuts. My swallowtale scanning the surface of the tank trying to find a way out. (Poking it's mouth at the surface constantly) and I'd see the flame and swallowtale swim at ludicrous speed across the entire tank. (6ft 125g tank).

well, the flame hasn't damaged the angel yet, but it's probably pretty stressed.

I also added a chevron tang (juvenile) Less than 1" in size and the flame has chewed part of it's tale off. And although seems to be leaving it alone now, I did see it nip at least one more time at it's tail.

Both the angel and the tang swim sideways when the flame comes by them. I see it as a submission dance saying hey I give up, leave me alone. But, the flame will just be a complete *****.

I actually saw the tang hide in a cave and the flame new it was there, it actually swam in circles outside the cave about 10 times before it gave up and swam away.

The flame doesn't touch any corals and eats whatever I feed just fine. But, has some major fish agression issues. Any suggestions short of tearing the tank down to capture the flame?

A friend suggested if I can catch it to throw it in the sump for a week then put it back in the display. I don't know if that would change anything, but stress the flame out more since my sump is pretty small (30g sump).

the flame is about the same size as the bellas.. Around 5".

A 5" flame angel - wow, never seen one that big!!!

Ocasionally you come across a nasty flame angel - I had one a few years back, just took him back to the lfs and heard no more about it.....

Catching him how are your diy skills? I've been trying to catch crabs lately and one of the biggest challenges has been keeping my navarchus out of the trap! I would suggest a plastic drinks bottle cut in half, but let the 2 pieces attached, the make a small hole in the edge of each half and feed some fishing line through it. Put some smelly frozen food in and a few bits of LR rubble to weigh it down, then drop it in the tank. When the flame swims in pull the line and he will be trapped.

I would say that he is a habitual bully - no rehab in the sump will do any good. He needs to go in a rough and tumble FOWLR with tough, bigger tankmates ......... try the FOWLR forum ....... I would love a 5" flame if I had a fowlr!!!

I agree with Matt. Catch the flame and get rid of it. It already has been a problem for someone else, and now as a new introduction to your tank it is a problem for your already established fish. It won't get better with time or anything else.

There is a lot of information here about using fish traps. You also can drain much of your tank into plastic containers to reduce the water volume if you have to net the flame.

Yeah, it's a very decent sized flame. Beautiful coloration. Maybe 4" not 5", Not sure, I haven't put a ruler to him. Although, If I had him out and had a ruler, I'd definately give him the beat down instead of measuring him. Heh. Yeah, my $100 Swallowtail and $200 chevron will not be sacraficed because of a bully fish...

I think for the peacefulness of the tank, I'm going to have to pull it. I've watched the tank the last couple nights when the lights are off, and my large angel is just pacing back and forth, I don't know if it's gotten any sleep. It definately doesn't show signs of feeling safe or peacefulness. I get on edge just watching the tank. LOL.

Time to trap / pull him somehow. Thanks for the validation.

He's the Alpha fish and will stay that way until he's in the company of fish with similar attitudes. Not at all uncommon with many Angels.
