Fish are DUMB!!

So, I'm sitting at my desk, and hear a splash... uh oh.

I get up and see water dripping from the light fixture. First thing I do is look completely around the tank, to make sure there isn't a fish on the carpet. Nope, no fish on the carpet, but I can't find my Solon Fairy Wrasse. Ahhh, there it is, in the left hand overflow. So, I get my step stool and pulling the durso out, careful with the net, not to let the wrasse go down the drain. Scoop it out and put it back in the display, WHERE IT BELONGS!!

So, for the next hour, I'm keeping an eye on the tank, watching for the wrasse to make an appearance, to make sure it isn't injured. Still haven't seen it. While watching, I notice that the Filefish is not out. It's ALWAYS OUT. It camoflages quite well, so maybe I'm just missing it. After spending a good 30 minutes looking for it, and not seeing it, I look in both overflows. Sure enough, it's in the OTHER overflow. DUMB FISH!! I just hope, in the 30 minutes or so, that the filefish was in the overflow, it didn't FORGET that it doesn't like Zoanthids, so far!!

Filefish is swimming around the display, as if nothing happened. Still no sign of the Wrasse. I imagine it'll come out when I feed the tank, here in a bit.

It is what they do. Your tank is not covered? Hmmm, the fish will be on the carpet, just a matter of when.

Nope, no cover. In about 6 years, I've had 5 tanks, all without covers. I've had 3 carpet surfers, in that time. 2 were 6 Lined Wrasses, 1 a 4 Lined Wrasse. It is a concern, but something I deal with. In the last 3 years, I have had to retrieve fish, from the overflows, more than 3 times...lol....probably close to 8 times.

haha that's a really comical story. still wondering if i should do a shallow when i upgrade for this reason.

My clown fish well go down the over flows on purpose. for some reason he likes the sump better than his 180 gallon home. I pulled him out of the sump every day for at least 3 weeks.

I had a swiss guard basslet disappear for four months and it was living in my overflow. It was perfectly healthy when I finally had to move my tank.

I am sure it was well fed. No neighbors, no predators. What is not to like?

:)

After losing five fishes over a period of a 2 years, I finally got netting up. That's not what I would call dumb fish, but dumb owner.

Now, I sleep and go to work carefree not worrying if I'll come home to a fish jerky or two.
Some of my fishes has landed in the sump a few times and after making some covering for my overflow from left over netting, I don't have to take out my net to often.

If I were you, I'll deal with the netting issue before regrets sets in. I lost a nice fat six-line and beautiful blue-jaw to carpet surfing! Don't want you to lose your wrasse.
