i caught it in the Persian Gulf coast. its about 1.5" in length, diamond-shaped, has 3 sharp prong fins/spikes (one up top and two below) and is shiney metalic silver in color with orange(? - i'm colour-blind) patterns. i've had it for about a month now, its swimming at all levels of the tank and seems to be feeding ok.

+1 on a file fish looks pretty cool and different from what I have seen at the regular retail or online stores

what does it eat? some filefishes are known to eat coral polyps for example acropora ones, others also eat aiptasia.

thanks guys.

it certainly does have a very small pouted mouth and other similarites to those filefish. i dont have any coral, though i do have a fair amount of LR which i have seen it peck at. other than that, i use the same bog-standard processed food - flakes and pellets, occasionally bloodworms - for all the fish and i guess it must find them nutritious as its still alive (unless its gonna have its growth stunted due to inadequate/inappropriate food?).

in terms of temperament, its swims around in the open more than any other animal i have and seems to be intimidated by none, including silver monos many times its size and myself when i glue myself to the tank like a drug addict! i dont know why, but its the only small fish that the yellowtail damsels dont bother chasing.

+1 on that, it is one of the tripodfish. If I wanted to hazard a guess, I would say it is a Pseudotriacanthus strigilifer, or it is one of the Triacanthus sp.
