Fish Classifieds- Looking for Active Yellow Fish...

Hey Everyone,

I'm finalizing the next couple of fish that I'm putting into my 60 gallon, and need your feedback. Specifically, I'm looking for a yellow active swimmer (either in and out of the rocks or in the upper to mid levels of the tank) that will get along with what I already have, and what I plan to place in the tank.

Here's what I've got:

> Randalls Goby with Pistol Shrimp
> Starry Blenny
> 2 Cleaner Shrimp, Snails for cleanup crew

Here's what I plan on getting:

> Clown Fairy Wrasse (Solar Fairy Wrasse)
> Orchid Dottyback
> Flame Angelfish

Any suggestions for a yellow active swimming fish?

Thanks in advance for your help!

lemon peel angel comes to mind, but probably would not be compatible with the flame angel, so you will have to decide between them.

yellow tang also comes to mind, but I consider a 60 gallon tank to be on the small side for one.

not sure if it's a mid-water swimmer, but have you checked midas blenny?

My yellow coris (H. chrysus) was always out and looked like a yellow highlighter swimming around the tank. You could see it from outside my condo through the livingroom window

no. CORIS is the wrong word for the chrysus wrasse :spin2:

Halichoeres chrysus Randall 1981 (1), is a fish of two "good" and one bad common name. It should be called the Golden or Canary Wrasse for its bright bold sun-yellow color, but is most often listed as the Yellow Coris Wrasse (Arggghhh!, it is not a Coris genus member of course). This is an exemplary aquarium species that is suitable for peaceful fish-only and reef systems. To a mere 4 inches or so total length.

I was also going to suggest the yellow assessor :)

I didn't even look at the genus, thanks for clarifying Korrine. :)

The only problem I have with yellow assessor is they are so shy. I had a blue one, and hardly ever saw it. And it was in a VERY peaceful tank, with seahorses.

If you want some yellow, maybe substitute a royal gramma for the orchid dottyback. Both are awesome fish, and the gramma has nice yellow on it, along with the pink/purple.

I know :D But I guarantee you if you try to ask for a Golden or Canary wrasse at most any LFS, they will look at you like you have two heads. Unfortunately the common name most use is yellow coris, which, incidentally, is why I provided the latin name, so as to prevent any confusion.

You guys are AWESOME!!!

Thanks for the feedback... I was thinking of a yellow assessor too, but I'm thinking that it will hide most of the time with the other type of fish in the tank.

The "Yellow Coris Wrasse/Golden Wrasse/Canary Wrasse" is definitely what I was looking for!

So do you think that there will be any problems between the Clown/Solar Fairy Wrasse and the Yellow Wrasse? And who do you think I should add first??? I'm going to a few LFS's in search of my next addition this weekend so that I can start the QT process.

I was also looking at the Yellow Candy Hogfish (which is one of the smaller hogfish and is supposed to be much less aggressive than other hogfish, and better suited for a reef tank), but I have read that it might go after "ornamental shrimp" which I would assume could include my Pistol and/or Cleaner Shrimp.

Thoughts???

You could probably go with either the Yellow Candy Hog (I believe it's also called the Two Spot Hog) or the Yellow Wrasse (refered to as the Yellow Corris). I've had a Yellow Candy Hog and it was fine, didn't both my Cleaner Shrimp. I currently have a Yellow Wrasse and it doesn't bother my Cleaner Shrimp. The only fish it bothers is my Copperband Butterfly, but not too bad. The Yellow Wrasse is definitely a bright yellow as compared to the Yellow Hog, which is a more faded Yellow with a redish-orange stripe. The Yellow Wrasse is also a cheaper fish around here anyway. HTH

Good to know Falconut... as always, I appreciate your input.

What about placement order? Clown Fairy Wrasse first or Yellow Wrasse?

I have both in my tank. The yellow wrasse was in there first for quite some time and the fairy wrasse went in last week. The yellow wrasse couldn't have cared less. So that's the order I say you go in. :)
