i have a nano tank and a 90g tank set up for almost a year. my phosphates are high and decided to add stress zime to augment bacteria besides more frequent water changes. in about 2 days my small clown in the nano has been gasping for air and now dead. today i find my magnificent foxface floating gasping for air in the 90g. all other fish look fine. 2 clowns, 3 firefish, 1 yellowhead sleeper goby, 2 dragonface pipefish, 1 dragonet, 1 purple tang, 1 lawnmover blenny. assorted hermits, turbo snails, astrea snails, sandsifter starfish. i slowed down my feeding dramatically to help with the phosphates, all bulbs have been replaced. the only thing done new is the stress zime and i dose according to label. i am doing a water change today but will check levels before i do that. be back soon

ok
here is the update. before water change surprisingly both tanks came up at identical numbers except one of them.
nitrate 5.0ppm
nitrite 0
phosphate 0-.25 it was like a one or the other type of reading so i think it is .15
ammonia 0
ph 8.2
kh nano 9, 90g 7
cal is now at 475 avg since i started mixing el cheapo salt with the tropic marin. the trpoic marin kept levels at about 540 which i did not like.
besides dead clown in nano, dead magnificent foxface in 90g
performed water change and also added poly filter to 90g. also running carbon. nano has no fish now and just a bunch of zoas
temp on both tanks is 90g 78F, nano 76F
no skimmer on nano, hair algae is present on both tanks and continue to battle it. feeding down to 2 times a week

I would raise the nano temp to 78F. Some phosphate adorption media in one of the filter chambers in the nano should fix the PO4 problem. Do you know the alkalinity of the tanks?

yes a 9 and a 7 for alk. also one thing i did not mention before is that i did try those phos x packs and they do act funny as far as flow goes. it had my skimmer going crazy in the 90g. the nano tank has a preset of 78F heater, maybe the stick on temp from outside is not accurate. i will drop another tyhpe in the tank. the nano is also getting a poly pad in the filter.

Sorry I missed your alk reading in your first post. Try PHosar by warner marine. I just switched to this media and like it very much. As for dying fish, you might try buying from a different dealer. Once the phosphates are lowered, should help your hair algae problem.
