I have two clown fish and one bi-color seudo (dottyback). This morning I noticed one of my clownfish had a huge swollen eye. I didn't notice anything else odd about the fish. Do you think this is some sort of illness or did he get into a fight?

I've had the bi-color for about a week and the two clowns for a day and a half.

thanks

It can also be caused by an injury like scraping it on a rock. My yellow tang had this and it cleared in about a week. It looked nasty and painful, but cleared on it's own.

Too many people, with good intensions, want to dump meds into the tank to "fix" something. Many times, even ich can be cured without meds.

My 2 cents,
Ed

One of my anthias had an eye swollen so big, I thought for sure he could never recover - but I soaked dried brine shrimp in that gel antibiotic (with a few drops of water) and fed that to him once a day for a week or so, I noticed better improvement when I increased the dose to 2 feedings/day -- Anyway he's fine now. His eye will never be perfect again, but it's only noticable if you're looking closely for it

Be sure and rinse the shrimp off well after it's absorbed the antibiotic before putting in the tank

Popeye can be caused by trematodes - which antibiotics wouln't help - but if the antibiotic is working then you probably don't have a parasite issue to deal with. Normally with popeye, you'd assume bacteria first unless you have some reason to suspect parasites - like if other fish in the tank are getting popeye also, for example

If you can use an antibiotic, that is definitely a good preventative (or a cure in pathogenic cases and in bilateral popeye, which should be treated via quarantine). If you can medicate food, then I would attempt that. In otherwise idiopathic cases, leaving it alone and continuing routines as normal is all that can be done. More often than not, it simply results from an abrasion or an impact and the swelling reduces on its own.

thanks everyone, I couldn't access RC til know and I dropped by my LFS on the way home. They recomended and sold me melafix. They said it was reef safe and the packaging says its reef safe. I just did my first dose. Anyone else use this in a reef? I will have to turn off my skimmer and uv for the 7 day treatment.
