Fish on the fringe...

What is everyones feelings on "fish on the fringe"? I am looking at adding a pair of blue throat triggers to my reef, or possibly a Niger. Does anyone have any experience with either of these in your reef tank? Will they bother corals, clams, crabs, ect.?

Blue throats are generally planktivores. They should be fine in a reef assuming you feed a reasonable amount. Obviously individuals will vary but I've kept blue throats without incident in my reef and have seen both sargassums and crosshatch triggers in reefs without any problems (other then size)

Xanthichthys triggers are generally accepted as reef safe... maybe shrimp would be in danger, if anything... but if you look at their awkward little upturned mouths, it's clear they are planktivores and are not really designed to pick at things.

I have a Male Blue throat in my lps dominated reef, He is probably the most peaceful fish in my aquarium. He has never gone after any of my shrimp ( he will actually go up to them to get a good cleaning ). He is super cool to feed as well since his trigger ( 1st dorsal ) comes out of the water like a sharks fin.
I would would recommend one.

Awesome! Thats exactly what I needed to know guys! Thanks so much for all of your in put, looks like a pair of blue throats for me this weekend!
