Fish sales

I am about ready to get fish for my tank and am not sure if I`m going to order them online or just stay local. As far as online and local goes can anyone tell me who would be trustworthy/have good quality fish?

Especially locally because I have gone to some of the pet shops around here and you have to wonder the condition of the fish because you will see lateral lines( Tangs specifically for lateral lines) and what appears to possibly be ICH on some fish.

Thanks Bill

As far as local, its hit or miss for me. I have purchased a few from Elmers and that is it the others always seem to look to scary.. It seems everyone gets new fish in on thursday so you might have better odds around that time.

If you are going to order online, i have always had good luck with
Liveaquaria.com
saltwaterfish.com
premiumaquatics.com

I regularly order from all three of those.

I get most of my fish from Wet Pets. They can also order them in if you are looking for one they don't have. I have got a couple from Elmers also. Wet Pets for me is the best place to purchase fish for local.

Yeah sorry I didnt even think about wet pets. I have yet to purchase fish from them, but they do have a great selection and immaculate tanks.

Where is Wet Pets located? Is there any particular person of contact there that is the most knowledgable in Saltwater that I should speak to?

Thanks, I will take a trip to see them before I do anything. I mapquested them and they are only 35minutes from my home. I`m looking at getting True Perc`s/Sailfin and a Powder Blue Tang.

Wet Pets is your best choice as said above. I purchase all of my fish from them and rarely have a problem.

I purchased a beautiful Powder Blue from them a few weeks ago for $50!! That was a sale though. They get new stock on Tues or Wed I believe.

I buy my fish from Seahorse, Wet Pets, and Elmers. If you look for healthy specimens who have been in their tanks for a while, I've found that any of those three stores have had 100% survival rates for me. Ich happens in shipping for a lot of fish (especially tangs) and if you look closely, you'll see it in any pet store...although big box stores like Petco seem to salt their fish, and you can tell that it's not just a small outbreak due to stress of shipping. A lot of the larger tangs that Seahorse and Elmers have that have lateral line were returns from customers, not actual products of the conditions in those particular stores, so overall I think it's a bit unfair to judge the quality of their systems based on a few individual fish. That's not to say that if I see an outbreak where every fish in the tank has ich, that I don't steer clear on that particular visit.

I never had any luck at all with liveaquaria...not sure why. NYAquatic is the only online vendor that I have, or would use due to an incredibly good experience with them, and the policy they have that they won't ship a fish that isn't eating in their tanks. Had a regal angel fish (generally considered hard to keep) shipped to me and was healthy and eating the first day. They have very good pricing too.

Overall however, I won't buy fish online, just because I like to see my exact specimen in the tank, and like to know that he's been healthy and eating for at least a week in the store's tank before I take them home. Any retailer should be willing to feed their fish for you to show you that they are eating. You run a much better chance of longevity and survival if you are patient and picky.

Good point. Ask the stores to feed the fish before buying, especially a harder to keep fish. I almost always have Wet Pets feed the fish I buy prior to purchasing. I too do not like to purchase fish online. I like to see the exact fish I purchase as sometimes colors vary wildly.

Yeah there have been times that I have been in all three of those stores and left due to the condition of the tanks. Some more than others, but it doesnt stop me from going back to look again.

I have had great luck online with fish purchases, but they are most common like clowns, and chromis, etc. I like to see what im getting if its a more expensive purchase, and depending on what tank its going in.

I stopped in once and spent less than 5 minutes in there. You will get some very mixed reviews on the place. I know 1 person that likes it.

Sea Horse

Sea Horse

Sea Horse had a deal last spring. They were placing a large order and you were able to order fish at a discounted price. The only catch was that you had to be there when the fish arrived to their store. They never put the fish in their tank. You just got the bag that it was shipped in. Don't know if they are doing it again this year or not.

I think Elmer's does this also.

Out of curiosity do any of you folks have any experience with Atlantis Custom Aquariums out on rt-51?

I have had good luck with fish from there. Never bought corals.

Call before you go to make sure Gary is there, when he is not there his mom watches the store. One of the big complaints is there are no prices on anything, and his mom doesn't know the prices so you can't buy anything.

For me its wetpets hands down. I like to support our local shops as much as possible for obvious reasons. I have never purchased live stock on line as I to like to see the fish in person.

Wet pets gets their fish on wednesday. I was down there this morning and they got a pretty large one in. I didnt get a look at it all, a lot of common items. Puffers, clown, tangs, chromis. Didnt notice anything odd but again i didnt see it all
