seeking suggestions for the final fish to add to my stocking list (I dont have any of the fish yet, but am tryign to compile my stocking list)

I have approximately 52 gallons of volume, however the display is only 24x18x18, so size may be an issue

anyways, the fish I have selected so far include
1. yellow watchman goby
2. true perc
3. yellow candy hogfish Bodianus bimaculatus
4. longnose hawkfish

I am looking for a showcase swimmer...too bad I dont have more room for perchers, they're my favorites

I have decided against the following : clown gobies (apparently fool around with acros too much), FLAME ANGEL (too risky on the corals/clams)

thanks for any suggestions you may offer

PS: obviously reef safe only

3. yellow candy hogfish Bodianus bimaculatus

They get too big/ too aggressive/ and aren't always invert safe.

On the inverse they can be shy and never get longer than 4" and are a model citizen.

They others are cool.

thats a bummer about the hogfish...might see how risky I get...we'll see

maybe a pair of those flasher's and we'll be good...that is IF I go with the hog

mpcart : if you read this thread can you provide some insight into the hog, its the same one you have

For a cruiser you can't go wrong with a Coral Beauty. Mine has never touched a coral or clam, although it depends on the fish.

Make sure there are absolutely no openings in your canopy if you get a longnose hawk. I had one jump thru a 1" square hole 3 inches above the water surface. That goes for many of the flasher wrasses as well.

my tank is open top but covered by eggcrate, so the openings are 1/2" squares continuous over the entire thing

Lonnie,

I almost thought of suggesting a Red Sand Hopper......but I figured it's SOOOO rare it may be difficult to come across any information

BTW, if you do find information let me know.

I had a longnose hawkfish several years ago. It is one of the favorite fish I ever had the pleasure of keeping. I fell in love with the bright red checks on white when I saw one in a public aquarium in southern california. I had one in my tank a few weeks later. It would perch on the highest rock and oversee the tank. I would joke that he was my watchfish. I would feed it baby guppies and brine shrimp. When it would see the net for feeding it would hover near the surface moving it tail back and fourth very hard. It resembled a puppy dog wagging its tail waiting for a treat. It was fun to watch. One night I forgot to close the glass cover on my aqarium and I found it on the floor the next morning. I think that was the saddist I have ever been losing a fish. It had a lot of personality and I really missed it.

I am not sure about reef safe. If memory serves me correctly thier favorite food is shrimp, so I don't think you can keep any shrimp with them. If it is compatible with everything in your tank then I would definately recomend a longnose hawkfish.

I have a Longnose hawkfish and messes with nothing. Not shrimps or anything. Does sometime perch on corals so that can be annoying but not TOO bad. One of my favorite fish in my display.

I'd get a nurse shark!

thanks guys,

the 4 I listed already are pretty solid, IM looking for an addition

I have wanted a longnose hawk since the first time I saw one, so even if it eats all of my shrimp I dont care

IM considering the coral beauty angel...I forgot that they are cool, at first I was thinking of the bicolor and Ive had one of those before and dont want one this time around

I cant believe they sold her that fish...here is what a red sand hopper is

yeah, that's what I got out of it. It's basically a sand flea or something. That's all you find on the internet.

I love my 6-line wrasse and that would be a good fit for you.

Another angel to consider is the cherub angel. They are smaller than most, which might be good considering your tank size. Mine is kind of aggressive though. He bosses my damsels around.

I have the both the hogfish and the hawkfish in my 58. The hogfish is an active swimmer that leaves the other fish and inverts alone - except for the hawkfish - it chases the hawkfish back to it's perch if it ventures out too far. Otherwise its a good looking fish with lots of personality.

My longnose hawkfish is my favorite. It spends most of the day perched on my SEIO powerhead and at night (when the hogfish is sleeping) it ventures out and perches on the corals, sand, whatever.

A pajama cardinal and firefish are the other fish in the tank.

Mike, in my tank would you suggest to get one or the other for the hog and the hawk and NOT both, based on your experience?
