Fish Trap

Reefing in NE
Does anyone have a good fish trap? I need to start moving fish over to my new tank (sorry Tom, lol) and I want to make it as stress free as possible. The fish are already a little spooked because I have been moving my corals to the new tank (sorry again Tom). I will gladly trade some frags or something for the use of the trap. :D

Yea...getting fish out is tough...I hate it. But the easiest way I have found is to get a little bit larger sized net and dip it a little below the surface and keep it real still. Then I just grab a piece of krill, let the fish much on it a bit and then lure them right above the net. Then you just quickly bring the net up and you got 'em. I had a small valentini puffer just the other day nipping at some corals of mine. It took me no more than 5 minutes doing this.

Now the fish are smart so if they figure it out and hide, come back in a half hour or so and start again. I know this sounds kind of silly but it has always worked for me and it doesn't require buying any fancy traps.

First of all I find no humor in your "rub the salt in the wound" comments!!:D Just kidding. Glad you are already to the point of using the new tank.

Just a suggestion, but can you just wait until all the corals and rock are out of the tank and then round up the fish. Makes it alot easier if there are no hiding spots.

JDrex, I'll give it a shot, thanks for the tip.

Tom, all in good fun. Since I didn't want the "wall of rock" look I don't think I am going to use all of my LR, but if I can't get them out I will wait it out so to speak. One reason for catching a few now is because I wanted to add a couple of the fish, wait and then put the rest in. That and I'm just not a patient person! (lol)

I still think even if you took out what rock you had left in the old tank and even put them in tubs, you could catch the fish and then put the rock back in. JMO but that would save alot of time rather than waiting for fish to jump into a trap. No offense, but anytime you use a net to trap fish you will stress them out. I personally would go the route of rock removal and use a bucket or container to get the fish out. Just my 2 cents.

One way to do it is to use a bucket or container of some sort that is fairly big, then just slowly force them into a corner. If the container is big enough, they won't be as frightened and will swim into it. Then its pretty easy to just move and dump.

oops, I just noticed Tom mentioned bucket or container in that last post!

You could always go fishing with a small hook and some food.

OHHHH!!! you DIDNT want to stress them out. Well i guess you could listen to those other crazy people with the nonstressful advice if you really must...

The problem with taking the rock out is fish hiding in them. We just moved my friends tank from a 75 to 120 about a month ago.

Got all the rock out into tubs with water from the 75. Noticed we were missing his 5" blue tang. Completely gone. We thought "O CR@P".

2 hours later he showed up in one on the rubbermaids. We thought we had crushed him.
