Hey people. Im taking care of a baby yellow belly blue tang. Its about half an inch long. And its in a 10 gallon tank to get a little bigger befor it goes in the main tank. The problem with these small little tangs is that they easly get ich and it can be a PITA. Lol.
But a lady I new at the lfs told me that when a fish gets ich u can use garlic since its a natural antiparisitic.
Well at first I thought it was kinda wiered. But after having my tang for a few weeks it got ich all over its body and I was worried...
So wat I did first is get 2 small cleaner shrimps, to hopefully help the baby tang out a little. And then I got one piece of garlic and I cut it in half so it can release its natural antiparisitic faster. I places the two pieces of garlic on the small hang on filters that are for freshwatter. That way I can easily get it out when im done.
Well after a day or two. I saw that the ich was almost nearly gone on the fish. I really liked how it worked. And if any1 is wondering... the cleaner shrimp were doing just fine. They eat and got bigger and the whole 9 yards. Also I did have pods in this small tank that were on the glass before I used the garlic and after I took the garlic out they were still there. Nothing died off just the ich. (At least from what I could tell) I had live rock and sand so I wasn't going to use copper meds.
THE DOWN SIDE!!
Well the only downside to this is that the water will smell like garlic. Lol. So if any1 out there tries this I recomend doing this in a small tank like 20g or less. I used a 10g.
Well that's my story. also after I got a baby 6 line wrassel and the ich returned and I did this again with same results. Well if any1 has a say on this reply to this. This method is a new one I heared. Since I heard of 3 other methods of treating ich. But this one seems to be my favorite with the help of cleaner shrimp. I also find this invert safe. Im sure its coral safe. Since a lot of nutrient inriched food liquides you put on fish food contain garlic. But to be on the safe side do it without corals. But I also have put some tank water in a contriner and added garlic and put frozen food and when it smelled like garlic I added it to my display with corals and the corals seemed fine. Just reember to take out the garlic.

I would of added pics but I don't know how. Sorry. =(

Keep a close eye on that tang. Garlic is not proven to get rid of ich. Ich does drop off of the host during one stage in its life cycle. This is possibly what you are seeing. It drops off of the fish to reproduce in the substrate. Its alos possible your fish can be infected in the gills where you cannont see it. They only proven cures for ich are copper and hyposalinity. Some fish are healthy enough to fight off ich on their own while many are not. Just keep an eye on the fish while in QT

I hope that you have read the "ich" thread at the top of the forum. There is lots of good information there. I would be worried about transferring your tang to the display tank no matter what size he is, because he likely still has ich, and will bring it to your display tank. Once fish are in the display, it is very hard to take them out to treat them.

I add as a preventative to my food, not a cure. I would seriously suggest hypo for 4-6 weeks prior to adding the tang to the DT.

hypothetically what would happen if the fish were to die? how long would you have to wait untill adding more livestock?

kook1e... to the DT or the QT?. If the fish dies in QT due to ich then the water would not be ich free for 4-6 weeks. However you could dump the Qt water and refill the QT on a water change. The DT is the same 4-6 weeks fishless will rid the water of ich.
