If you haven't been to Fishy Inc. yet you should check it out. I picked up a nice hawkfish from him yesterday...

If anyone knows the scientific name please pass it on. Thanks!

hard to tell just from the front without seeing the sides, but it looks like a banded hawk ( Cirrhitops fasciatus )
 
I just got a freckled hawk after working on an article about the Giant Hawkfish, and the little guy is awesome--after three days he eats from my hand. Already one of my favorites.
 
Mine eats everything. Flake, pellet, frozen, you name it. Anthony's giant hawk is fed frozen shrimp and other meaty seafood (he'd eat a whole jar of flake at a "sitting", he's so big).
 
Oh. :) Yeah, I wouldn't attempt it. Also keep in mind that the bigger hawkfish aren't such good reef tank fish, because they perch on everything. They sit on corals and annoy them badly--Anthony had to eventually pull most of the corals out of the hawkfish tank.
 
Oh great, I was planning my reef comeback and everything.

Hopefully, I will be able to keep corals off his favorite spots....

I was surprised how quickly he has become friendly. I was told I may not see much of him for the first few days while he acclimated.
 
Well, you can always give it a try and see how it goes. I'm sure there are some corals that will be less disturbed by them. Also, keep in mind the Giant Hawk is about 14" so he can do a lot more damage :).
 
I got a used 90G complete setup and it included a beautiful flame hawkfish. He jumped out of the tank and I didn't find him until it was too late.... I don't know if it was a freak thing or if hawkfish are jumpers, but you may want to cover your tank.
 
By live tank mates, do you mean invertebrates or do I need to worry about putting a geen mandarin in the tank as planned???

Anyone's comments with experience with this fish is welcome and appreciated.

Trying to setup the tank correctly this time (even though I have a Lemonpeel Angel which will most likely make meals out of my corals)
 
Mandarin shouldn't be a problem, but damsels, gobies and the like might. Just check the size. If it looks like it could fit in it's mouth...

Which might be a problem down the road with fish that don't grow in comparison to the hawks mouth size...
 
gotcha, any corals that you know of to stay away from???

I am planning on having zoos/rics on bottom, LPS (blastos, chalices, acans) on the middle, a RBTA (wherever it feels like attaching) and maybe easier to keep SPS on top...

Hawks don't normally bother corals, except for the occasional perching on them.
Most corals get used to it after a while, but some don't.
If you find a coral closed more then often because of perching, move the coral. Hawks are very predictable creatures of habit that tend to follow similar patterns, like obsessive compulsive hand washers. :lol:

Otherwise, it sounds like you have a great plan on planting your aquarium with corals.:thumbsup:
