fission skimmers?

well the search is busy again so thought i'd post this here to see what people think. has anyone ever used a fission skimmer for nanos? i saw one today at a lfs. the guy said he hasn't heard good or bad from customers about them. i don't want to get one if people have had bad experiences with them.

tia.

I'm running one now on my 24..I'm not sure yet, I've had it running for about 3 days and here's some thoughts:

negatives: lots of bubbles, water level sensitive
positives: lots of bubbles, small size

I've read alot of mixed reviedws thus far, some love it and some hate it, for 30 bucks, it may be worth the risk and see if it will work in your system.

I like it but I'm having a bit of a problem with bubbles as well...mostly having problems getting it adjusted to the water level. However, aside from the bubbles, my tank has never looked better :)

sorry to be a complete dunce, can you both explain the water level thing? my current skimmers don't seem to have problems with water levels.

I agree try it and see if it is for you.I have had one for 3 weeks it works but it is so dependent on that water level its a pain. I have a 12g nano everynight top off or the next morning the water is to low to make the bubbles.

i have one ...

at first it made lots of bubbles, but that went away after a week or two.

problem is, it seems to collect nothing but water - no skimmate. maybe i have to tweak it a little.

overall i'd say it's done nothing positive for me.

I love mine. Pulls decent skimmate and I never have to fuss with it.

I got to vent something here. everybody cmplains about micro-bubbles. How is it that you guys are having so much trouble dissipating bubbles with three chambers to do so in the back? With a bag of carbon, filter floss, or any other filter media would solve this problem in a second. I don't know I just see everybody saying micro-bubbles are the problem when they have all these chambers to take care of them.....

I was starting to get skim-mate. Then I took the skimmer out to blow out the hose. After doing this it wasn't working, it was just swirling water. So I carried it with me to a RC meeting and a fellow reefer fixed it for me. I had not put the plastic triangle thing back into one of the slots in the pump. Then after that it worked. I do have a few bubbles and it is in the first chamber and I do have a carbon pack. Then in the next chamber I have rock rubble and cheato, then in the last chamber two pumps going to the returns. The bubbles aren't too bad. Mine is still on the new side. But I am still pleased with it.

I do wonder though about water level. Not really sure on this.

reefwick: there are onlt 2 chambers in the back on the aquapods, and I guess I can understand where you're coming from but everyone has their own way of setting up a system. I'm not a fan of carbon, never used it in any of my systems and yes, some type of floss would probably work but I think the spirit of opinions on the fission isn't surrounded on the micro-bubbles but more that the water level has to be more exact. On the Pods the cover sits too close to the top of the water so the fission sinks lower and thus let's out too many bubbles, I have my tank water level lowered just to make this work. I think I'm going to wait for the nano remora I heard about and see how that works.

If you put in all the black wiers in the back and cut a pieace of plexi to fit on the top it will work just as a regular over flow. I have a 24 ap and by doing this it lowers the water level in the back and the skimmer fits good. Also allows you to put a good top off system that way not to worry about water level. I also just put a piece of 3/4 in.thick floss to cut down any excess bubbles. Hope this helps!

all the black pieces are in and the plexi just slides in. You may have to cut it a couple of times till you have the right hight. This alows you to control the level of water in the back. You may have to remove some water after installed.

I have a two gallon pico tank which is now producing a bit of protein. Should I go for one as well or just do more water changes?

Check nano-reef.com for reviews. Apparently, this is the worst skimmer ever.
thanks everyone. i think i'll hold off & find a different skimmer for my 2.5.

i wouldn't check nano-reef. they were really rude to me when i first posted a question about cycling as a complete newbie last year.
