Flagfin Angelfish

Per the title, does anyone have a Flagfin Angelfish (Apolemichthys trimaculatus)?

I'm looking to setup a FOWLR, and I'd like to be able to have success with this angel, but I'm cautious due to their dietary requirements.

I dont think anybody on this form has an adult flagfin if that tells you anything but you could be one of the first....nice fish but an ocean fish.

Actually I have a 4" adult in my tank. I also know someone else who has had one in their tank for a while. I had read that they can be picky eaters, but I have never had a problem getting mine to eat. He will even eat frozen food directly from my hand. When I first got mine in January, he was eating spirulina enriched brine shrimp, PE mysis, and Rod's food herbivore formula. He now will also eat Spectrum pellets, Ocean Nutrition Angel formula, and anything else I put in my hand. The only thing that mine will not eat is Nori.

I have a 180g tank and he was my first addition, but has thrived there. I can only tell you from my experience, but I have had success so far with mine.

dkanka, thanks for the response. I'm sure the fish looks beautiful in your tank. How would you describe his reaction to other fish in the tank?

There are multiple people with flagfins don't just spout off nonsense when you don't really know. They are picky but once feeding are a fairly hardy fish.

I have been taking my time stocking and so far have a juvenile emperor and a goldenheaded sleeper goby in there with him. Usually they each will do their own thing and have no aggression towards each other. Once in a while the emperor will chase the flagfin for a second but quickly gives up. It is kind of funny when I hold a piece of frozen food in the tank because the flagfin gets first dibs on the food and the emperor patiently waits for chunks to fall off.

Yeah, the trick is to find one that will eat. After that, they're pretty hardy. Your best bet is to try to find a smaller specimen.

I had one but lost it to ich. It was completely my fault and I am still kicking myself. Absolutely beautiful fish for a FO setup. I would love to try a pair at some point.

Sorry to hear about your angel :(

If and when I start the search for a flagfin, I'll definitely look for a smaller one. Still trying to decide if the fish will outgrow my 90...
