Flame Angel Question?

Im full of questions tonight :). In your opinion which would be a safer bet in a reef tank, a Flame or a Coral Beauty. I really want a flame but if the Coral beauty would be safer I might consider one, Im not really sure what Im going to get in the way of corals yet, tank's still cycling, and im gonna probably get the fish B4 I start with corals.

I would go with the flame angel. Only basis on this is due to the fact that I've seen numerous flame angels in reef tanks, and I've only seen Coral Beautys at an LFS.

both are hit or miss in a reef tank, each fish is an individual, some will nip at coral some won't. I have a flame that originally nipped at my sps, after it while it stopped of course then it became a bully towards my some of my other fish.

I've had a coral beauty in a reef for 6 months, no problem at all. Now you've heard of a coral beauty in a reef. ;)

My Flame Angel has been in my 55 gal reef for about 9mo now with no problems (yet). My tank has few sps and mostly lps and it has never nipped at anything. It has been a peaceful tankmate and IMO is one of the prettiest fish out there. The bright colors make it stank out as it swims about the rockwork.

I've had a Coral Beauty almost 3 yrs. now in my tank and no problems. He eats like a hog and is really beautiful and colorful. I've always wanted a flame angel- they are gorgeous, but I'm afraid now my coral beauty and bi-color would go after it if I was to add a newbie angel.

I agree that both are hit or miss. And you can't go by how many you have seen in reef tanks alone, because the flame is just a more common fish sold, and more easily attainable. I personally have a flame that does fine with no nipping, but that doesn't mean anything. You hear bad stories and good stories about both.

coral beauty sell for $20, vanuatu flames for $70. the LFS's sell tons more beauty's than flames.

my flame is a model citizen...

I don't agree. Used to work for the LFS, and frequent quite a few others, they all sell more flames than coral beauties. The Xmas Island ones here sell for around $25, the same price as the coral beauties or a little less. When we got shipments in, we would weekly order at least one flame, whereas we would only order coral beauties if they were on sale or there was a special order. Probably differs depending on your location, though.

the LFS i work in goes thru about 2 dozen $20 coral beauty's a week-10 days, we go thru a half dozen flames..if your getting flames (that live) and they're retailing for $25, then ya, i can definitely see them outselling CB's. all the cheap flames i've seen never eat and are likely from the PI's, which is why we go for the vanuatu ones.

can y'all explain the difference... PI and vanuatu- didn't know about that and would like to know, in case I ever decided to get one. Thanks-

I've had a total of four flame angels i believe. The first three were modelled citizens and died either due to crappy LFS (died on the first day I got it) or uncontrollable tank catastrophes. I have had many uncontrollable tank catastrophes... The fourth one was the only one that I was forced to return. It just wouldn't stop going after my brain corals. So, with my experience, you have a 75% chance of getting a reefsafe flame angel. Of course, there is nothing scientific about my "experiment."

Wow, that's a lot of coral beauties... I just don't see as much interest in our area.

I bought mine for $25 (less with the employee discount), I've never had any problems getting mine to eat, and have never heard of that. The only difference I have heard with the location issues is the difference in coloration.

I've had three flames, none have lived long enough to nip my corals. :(

All other fish in my tank live, but can't seem to have any luck with Flames.

Wow my LFSs want 60-70 bucks for them, I would buy it online, but I don't want to risk it, especially with a flame. So heres a question if I were to add a Blue Tang, Ocellerious Clown, and a Flame, which would be the best order to add them in to minimize territorial behaviour/agression? I've read that clows will claim the whole tank as theirs, and attack any new fish if I add them first, and have heard the same about Flames.

My last one, I bought from LiveAquaria for even less than that, and it lived for 4 years in my first tank before a power outage disaster. Is there a reputation for these fish not traveling well or not doing well? This is actually the first I've heard of it. From my experience (limited with the 2 I've had, but also with the ones we got into the store), they've been of average hardiness. I would never buy one for more than $50 regardless of where it came from! Much better deals online, and places like liveaquaria have live guarantees.

I would go with clown, tang, flame (any fish can display territoriality if a new fish addition is separated by months and months.. but generally ocellaris is not that bad). I added a 6 line yesterday to my lineup, and my flame is the one that is least interested in it; he only picks on fish that are very red or (I would imagine) any other angel.

anything i've read suggests that the coral beauty is historically the best of all dwarf angels.
I have a flame in my tank, and I think he takes a chomp out of my leathers sometimes. Every so often, I notive little marks that look like little bites on my finger leather....... the other inhabitants are tangs and a clownfish..... so the flame is the only suspect really, and I think I have seen him out of the corner of my eye taking a bite...... so if they give leathers a go, well I suppose anything would be fair game.

For what its worth, if I was trying to set up a cool looking reef tank, I wouldn't get any angels at all - but if I had to have one, Iwould go with the coral beauty.

I have a flame in my reef and it looks more like a nervous picking if that makes any sense. Kinda like girlfriends when they go shopping they have to touch almost all the clothes in the store. Never does any damage though. Did bit a couple of chunks out of my zoos. Might want to watch zoos. I would recommend the flame if you want to risk your zoos.
