Flame Angel: Reef Safe?

I've been mulling over my next fish addition for a while now. That said, I've been looking at a Flame Angel for its personality, size, and beauty.

However, I've heard they can be problematic with fleshy LPS corals, and my reef is full of acans, zoas, brains, and other similar corals.

I had one for a few months in a smaller cube and it never bothered any corals, but again, it was only for a few months.

So, what's your experience been w/ Flame Angels and Mixed Reef settings?

Please vote and also share your experience as well.
Thanks:thumbsup:

I currently have 6 dwarf angels, with a flame being one of them. They all nip, but haven't had too much damage. There has been one common thing about all 6, they LOVE fleshy LPS, for mine, it is like crack.

I've had a Flame for a couple of years and no problems so far. I feed three times a day and one feeding is always Nori.

I had a Flame for about 8 months with no problems until I put some Sunny D palys in a few weeks ago. He started munching them, so out he went. I did have a Coral Beauty for 6 1/2yrs without any issues, so you never know.

One of my favorite fish. I got one not to long ago and he quickly began nipping my open brain and my acans. I Just had to get him out. To bad since as I stated before one of my favorite fish.

Yes, indeed. Although in my case, more like ice cream (no intended slam to Todd about liking crack, I just love ice cream )

I also just purchased a flame. Too nice couldn't resist. I have some nice zoas in there. Hope he doesn't have the munchies. From what I read it's a 50/50 crap shot.

You'll be fine. I had two and have a bunch of Lps. the first was fine for 6 months until a powder brown tang infested my tank with ich, he died. My 2nd was in my tank for 2 days until I had to take him out cause of a dam coral beauty kept chasing him. I have a friend who has one also and no problems.

Hopefully he won't cause any problems for you.

Has anyone had issues with flame angels and anemones? Specifically carpets?
Thanks

My flame has never bothered any of my S. haddonis, but I would be more concerned about the flame being eaten. I have found that a clownless S. haddoni is actually safer then one with a clown -- no reason for the dwarf angel to go by it.

I have a flame now and he is in a sps dom tank with some lps he is on his way out as it nips every coral I have in the tank. He has taken a special liking to my sps polyps esp my montis and acros if I have to spear him I will trap has been in place for three days still no luck

I have one in a seperate tank now he killed a couple acans an open brain a fungia plate and a couple sps frags. I didn't want to believe it was him because i never saw him nipping but i eventually got him out and everything has turned around for the better now. Also he was probably the toughest fish I have ever or will ever have to catch.

There is a reason dwarf angels are considered to be 'with caution' in a reef tank. Some can be model citizens, others, terrors. No amount of advice here will change that fact. What I have found, through trial and error, is that if the flame is the apex fish it will be more likely to nip than if it is not. I understand there is little scientific validity to my limited sample size, but if you must put a flame in your reef, get some fish to give it a the run around.

^^ agreed and to mark I got mine in less than ten mins with a diy fish trap :) my flame thoufh is in my qt waiting for a trip back to the lfs. With in the last six hours he was I the tank he almost killed my plate three sps are goners and my open brain was malled.

Sorry to hear that. I actually do have a flame in my 90 gal mixed reef and have yet to see him nip at anything. But he is at least #5 on the pecking order so has little mine to loiter....
