Flame Hawkfish

I am interested in getting a flame hawkfish in the near future, and was wondering if it would eat my cleaning crew snails. I know the flame is fond of shrimp and small fish, but i won't have a shrimp and the smallest fish i will have will be an ocelaris clown (and of course corals). I have a 12 gal. Nano DX. Some input would be great. Thanks, Sean

Some will. We have a fellow club member that has a flame hawk that eats hermits, shrimp, snails, crabs, etc. Nothing is off limits to this little guy.

A 12g is way to small for a Flame Hawk or any Hawk for that matter. You might want to check some of the gobyies, they many of them tend to perch like hawks.

i agree

flame hawks are way cool! sometimes they will take out your snails if you do not feed often and it gets hungry, but, ...

sounds like you would be better suited for a goby in your nano

i have a flame hawk and doesn't bother any snails, etc at all. keep it well fed and u will not have a problem. mine eats like a nut. the only thing they will probably bother/eat are shrimp. 12g is small for a flame hawk but mine doesn't swim alot, kinda just bounces from rock to rock.

I have a flame hawk in my 75g. He has never eaten a snail or hermit crab to my knowledge. he did eat a peppermint shrimp once though. Never touches corals.

BTW I also agree that a 12g might be too small for this fish.

i have a flame hawk and it has never even looked twice at any of the inverts in my tank.

a 12g is definitely too small for a flame hawk, but a Pigmy Geometric Hawk is a great choice for a nano. like this guy:

Or maybe a Falco or Pixie hawk. IMO a flame is too big for a 12gal. Besides you already have a fish in it already.

never had an issue with my little guy either... like everyones said, keep them well feed (my eats everything/anything) and you wont (shouldn't) have an issue!
