Flame scallop in NPS

IMO these do not last very long. Both me and a friend bought them on sale at a lfs, they were the electric kind. We I tried supplementing with marine snow and my friend used DT Phytoplankton (live, refridgerated) after a few weeks ours both died. We asked the store and they said that even they have difficulty keeping them, hence the sale. Maybe we got them and they were a bad bunch :(

If you do get them, they need some kid of specialized care and feeding that I have not figured out. Maybe someone else can chime in with their success.

But was this in a dedicated NPS tank ?

Nope. We both had them in mixed reefs. I put mine in a shadowy area in a rock cave, maybe that prevented it from getting enough flow?

I have had a flame scallop in my 29 gallon reef for about 9 months now. It's by no means easy, but it is do-able. I feed it reef nutrition's phyto feast live as many times a day as I can manage and I through a 16 oz bottle every 3 weeks (which is not cheap).

In a dedicated nps system, I don't see why you couldn't keep one or two, especially if you kept your own phyto cultures.

I have had a flame scallop for 3 months on the 1st. I keep him in a 5 gallon reef and feed him 3 times a week. Just a warning he is very destructive in my tank although in a larger tank it would probibly not be much of a problem.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I've had 2 flame scallops now and I can say from experience yours isn't going to last much longer. My first scallop died of starvation after about 6 months being fed 3 times a day

Ive had one for over a year in my NPS tank. hasn't moved in 4 months. The tank is all NPS and is about 30 Gal. I believe they feed on phytoplankton only. The tank gets 6-7ml of Phytofeast a day.

I have one in mixed SPS/LPS/Sun corals for more than a year. It's not changing location and looks great. I feed mix of fauna marine ultra clam, DT's rotifers and phyto, Cyclopeeze and artemia two times a day.

I know this thread is old, but I thought I'd share anyway. My flame scallop had relocated himself to the back of the tank months ago, but I'm redoing the tank so I was able to find him. I got him in either December 2011 or January 2012 so that makes it about 10 months in my reef so far.
Here's him in Feb 2012

And here's him today. (DSLR vs. iphone accounts for the difference in quality)

Just as healthy as the day I got him :)

I had a flame scallop in my 55g for about 7 months. (I fed my tank phyto, oyster feast, and coral frenzy) He didn't moved around a lot and always seemed healthy. Then one day I found an empty shell and a fat cleaner crew. . .

Had one for over a yr, die in a crash tank 4 months ago. It was in a mix tank with SPS on top, LPS at the middle and NPS at the bottom, caves and at the bank of the tank. The flame scallop (Electric kind) moved itself into a cave with mid flow and no lights. I feed my tank with oyster fest and Rodi everyday. It was healthy and thriving. I used nano reef prodibio also. that stuff makes everything possible.

On a side note, I had tried 6 elegance corals 5 of them die after a month or so. 4 Flame scallop. But after using prodibio, this electric flame scallop and this indo elegance were doing amazing. Not only surviving but growing. Everything else, light, flow tank stat, everything is the same the only thing different is this nano reef prodibio additive thing.

I have never been able to keep one in a mixed reef tank. I have tried twice now. And I actually have one comming by mail on tuesday for one last try.

I kept a very small one (about an inch across) in an nps pico for about 6 months before the tank crashed due to an outage. They need to be fed. If I ever setup another nps system, I'd try one again. They are lovely.

i have two large ones in a 300 gallon. the only thing i dont like is that they move. i have had both of mine for 6+ months and they dont look sickly, sad, dying, anything bad. i do not spot feed them at all. i think the key to keeping these is large volumes of water. with lots of water there is lots of stuff to filter feed. people say dont get them because they will die but try and keep them in a 29gallon cube.

if they are in a small tank be ready to broadcast feed your tank. if a big tank, toss them in and hope they dont move to where you cant see them(which is likely)
