i purchased two of them around june or july and both are doing just fine. They are fun to watch when i do see them which is rarely because they hang on in the back of the tank . I add oceans blend food every other day and either they are living off of that or theres enough food in the water for them.
I ahve had a few from pressure from my wife. The longest Ihave been able to keep one is 5 or 6 months. No problems with corals but they move around quite a bit. I will not buy another one she finally gave up on me getting another one.
I had one for about a year and a half I though it had died until I found it under some rocks one day. Anyway if you have a "dirty tank" they seem to do ok. If you keep you tank nice and clean like reef tanks tend to be then you aren't going to have the best of luck IMO. If you feed phyto often like in a non-photo tank you might be ok though.
ive owned two for 2 months now in my 180 gal. they seem to be doin fine, i feed them phyto, every few days.they stay in their lil cave, move around at night! think im a buy electric scallop s next.
I'll jump in on this since I've had a flame scallop for going on 4 months now.
My flame scallop has been attached to a rock since the first week I got it. It sits on the sand bed, attached to the rock that is concave in shape, so there is some flow going to it. It seems to be happy and healthy. I rarely do direct feeding and it seems to do just fine. I do dump phyto in every once and awhile.
Keep in mind they can and often do require several months of inadequate nutrition to starve to death. This is why folks often claim they've had some for several months and think they are doing well. To keep them longer than the time required to starve to death does indeed take large quantities of high quality phytoplankton of the right species.
