Im thinking of getting a mystery wrasse to add the to the flame wrasse i already have in my tank. would that be a good idea or will they end up killing each other? i have a 4x2x2ft 120g tank.

Mystery wrasses are not good with fairy wrasses. The most likely outcome is that your flame will loose (and may die.)

if you guys had to pick one or the other, which one would you get? the flame wrasse seems to be more expensive compared to the mystery here.

Flame wrasse is one of my favorite so I would choose that over the mystery everytime. Plus if you want to add a another fairy wrasse down the road it will be hard with the mystery.

hmm... good point. does the mystery wrasse hunt anything that the flame doesnt? i hear its really agressive towards shrimps and other inverts. is the flame the same way?

also would it help if the flame wrasse is 2x the size of the mystery? the mystery in the LFS is quite small while the flame wrasse is huge!

I have a mystery with my flame harem in a 220 gallon tank. No big issues but my mystery does kill shrimp. Mystery was added after the flames.

I have a mystery wrasse (4.5") with a pair of long fin fairy wrasses (3" each)with no aggression. I do keep them all pretty well fed though too and I have lots of rock work and caves. The mystery wrasse definitely eats shrimp. He ate all my peppermints and cleaners. Wont touch my pistol shrimp though. The Fairy wrasses and mystery wrasse were added at the same time.

My friend has a male flame in the tank first and he added a smaller mystery, no problems so far. They both seem to get along real well. Also, he then added a larger lineatus and no problems from the mystery. Guess it depends on the size of the fish as well.

It depends on a lot of factors: size of tank, size of fish, order of introduction AND time. Over time, those relationships can change, especially in smaller tanks.

if it was me i would go with the flame..i just will not trust a mystery wrasse with amy fairy or flashers..they may be fine but over time that can change and adding wrasses after the mystery is asking for trouble imo

I have a sixline wrasse with my blue sided fairy wrasse. I believe snorvich put it best.
The blue sided is significantly large- at least 3 times the size and was introduced to the tank at least 1 year prior to the sixline.

While this is extreme, and sum what unintended, I think it can "work" with careful consideration and patience.

for the flame wrasse, how can you tell if its male or female?

i think the LFS only has the male ones i think without any female. will its color fade over time?

how small is the flame, all juvis are female...you may need to purchase 2 to keep/promote the change to male
