Flame Wrasses: Pair or Trio?

I'm thinking about getting a pair of flame wrasses for my tank, and was wondering if a supermale will keep his colors in the presence of a single female? I don't mind getting a second female if that is the case, but I would rather save room for a different fish in my tank if possible.

I've read and heard a single female will do fine. I'd go with that route so you have an option to add an extra fish.

A male and female will do fine. HOWEVER, male flames are difficult shippers so many people get a male and two different sized females so that if the male does not make it, the dominant female will convert.

Another route would be to buy a trio of females and the dominant female should turn into a male. This happened to me.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm lucky enough to work at a LFS so I can keep an eye on them before I take them home. I think I'll stick with a pair.

Just get 2-3 females and watch them slowly transition.

Males only ship bad because when they're imported, they're shipped in the same bag.
Knowing males, they'll do a death dance. They won't die immediately but will in a few days.

If you want to bet your money on something, get 2-3 females.

If you got some to burn, go with a pair.

not really true, the problem with getting all females is you more then likely will end up with a group of sub males, get a true male and a true female, if the female has started changing at all reguardless of a male being present it will still go to a sub-male, ive been through this before and i have a true super-male almost 6" in size and is my avatar picture, i do have a female also but havent had it long enough to see if it is gonna change or not, but the trio of females i had added before all started to turn sub-male, but they was close to the change when i got them

Thanks for all the imput. I think I'll go with a pair. I don't mind spenidng a little extra to ensure get what I want.
