Flamehawk in a Reef?

I have a Flamehawk that has been in a tank with a Saddleback clownfish & a Lawnmower Blenny (recently died). Tank is bare bottom, little rock.

I want to move him to my 125 which currently houses 3 Firefish,3 Chromis & a Allard's Clownfish. I am also thinking about adding a Kole & maybe a few PJ Cardinals.

question/s being.
Anyone have a Flamehawk in their Reef, and if so with what and how is it's agression towards tankmates?
I read alot that they are bold, but I have no idea as to how bold as it has never been with any other fish.
I realize I can't have shrimp, but will they munch on crabs & snails too?

So if you have one in your Reef, let me know what you think, plus's & minus's

I've always kept at least one Flame Hawk in my reef tank. Never have seen aggression toward any fish. I cannot address the 'bold' question without context. They are not shy, if that's what you mean, as they are almost always visible, but they're not the type to bully or even intimidate anyone. Mine have never picked on any of my snails or hermit crabs, though if they caught one in mid-molt...?

All in all, they're very personable fish and quite the eye catcher because of their color and perching behavior. Pretty disease resistant, ime. I've heard many hobbyists name this fish as one of their all time favorites.

I agree with 64Ivy but since I like shrimp, do not keep them. I used to keep one for a LONG time, however, and it was very personable.

Thanks for all the imput.
I have had him for at least 1 1/2 years, takes no crap from the Clown, but just wanted to be sure before I moved him

I've never had a problem with my hawkfish in my reef tank either. He is quite entertaining and has never bothered any of my fish, corals or large cleaner shrimp.

No problems with my Flame in my reef. I have 4 shrimp - 2 cleaners, 1 Fire and 1 Peppermint. All are pretty good size and all were in for quite a while before I put in the Flame. He hasn't even given them a second look, but they stay in their caves during the day and come out when the lights are off (they aren't stupid...:)). No issues at all with my Flame and other fish, other than my clown pair chasing him off if he gets too close them.

WoW ! So some of you even have shrimp that were there before the Hawk and no problems.
Maybe time to get a shrimp and wait a little, then move my Hawk ?
I know its a gamble.
The neighbor had a Hawk, dropped a 28.00 cleaner shrimp in his tank, and the Hawk ate it before it hit the bottom of the tank.At least the fish had a nice gourmet meal.

My Flamehawk has no issue at all. I have 1 Pepperment and 1 Fire shrimp in my mixed reef BC29 for about 4 months. They run into each other all the time but I have never seen any agressions between them.

Was your Flame introduced prior or after your shrimp?

I had Peppermint first, the Flame was introduced approximately three weeks later, the Fire shrimp was added three weeks after the Flame.

Initially I was worried about the imcompatibility between the Pepperment and Flamehawk, but my wife had her eye on the Flame that I had to take the chance. I was ready to get the Perppermint out of there if I saw any agreesions from the Flame, but it had never happened. The Flame has since become the favourite for the whole family.

The Fire was added three week laster, and again there were no issues there.

Just for your reference, my Flame is about 2", Peppermint 1"~1.5" and Fire shrimp ~2".

mine is also a model citizen had him for a year now. never showed aggression towards anything. keep it fed and itll leave everything well alone

I don't have a flame hawk...I have a dwarf/mottled hawk. It is too funny. Quite the character, always out and about, and is the first to investigate any new additions, though it has never shown aggression toward any fish. My friend had it for years in his tank, and it obliterated any snails or hermits he introduced. It's been in my tank for 2 months, and hasn't touched any of my snails, though my snails are pretty large. If you want to add a shrimp, add it after lights out. I made the mistake of adding some nassarius snails during the day, and as soon as I dumped them in, my melanurus wrasse ate 4 of them. It had never touched any of my other snails, though I do suspect it ate all my hermits, because I haven't seen one of those in many months. In that case, it did me a favor!

Tagging along on this thread...hope you don't mind a quick question...

Those of you who have had a flamehawk in your reef, did it bother your corals at all?

I have not seen my Flamehawk bother any of my corals intentionally; but I do saw him knocked down my mushroom rock once as he swam by. It is his swimming style, which is darting around....... My Hermits do that a lot.

I have a pair with several blood, scarlet and coral banded shrimp. One Ive had for over 4 years and the 2nd I just added about 6 months ago. Great fish with tons of personality. I dont think I would keep a tank now without one!

I'm also interested in adding a flame hawk but am worried about my pair of harlequin shrimp.. Does anyone have personal experience mixing the two?
