Flasher wrasses-suggestions on combinations to keep together

Hi All, I am interested in getting 4-5 flasher wrasses for my tank. I thought about 2 pairs so the males will flash a lot for their ladies...but wondered if I can get 4-5 different males and get them to flash each other. I had a filamented and he never flashed. If I do decide to go the pair route where is the best place to get a pair?? What pairs would get along best? What 4-5 types would get along okay? Currently the only wrasse in the tank is a leopard wrasse.

Well, my experience the absolute best has been harem. If you want five, get a male plus four females. The problem with this is getting females since most folks (LA DD is an exception) only bring in males because of the difference in coloration. Ok, that being out of the way, get two pairs or a harem of three and a pair. Females will help the male retain the ability for full nuptial coloration.

I even have difficulty finding a pair, or females for that matter, on LA Diver's Den. I like the idea of a harem of three with another pair. Any suggestions as to which ones do well together?

Well, for the most part, they all do well together (except the gorgeous but rarely available Red Sea eight line flasher wrasse which has a propensity for aggressive behavior) so pick the male coloration you like and go from there. I like the McCoskers and Yellow-fin or carpenter's. The Royal Flasher is gorgeous but less frequently available. Perhaps if you get two pairs, a male Royal would be nice with them.

I have 2 Carpenter males and then 3 juvis/females in a 190. Many places do collect smaller specimens besides the larger males. I believe that my smaller specimens are McCoskers (sold as Carpenters) because they only have one filamented ray in the dorsal finnage.

Of course they do not hang out together, but there is not any real aggression either. The males rarely flash at each other.

we need to take a road trip I have a few places to try:cool:

I often see them sold as undifferentiated juveniles. Could you get one adult male and three juvies and have any confidence that the juvies will stay female?

I month ago I got a McCoskers and he flashes often at my yellow Assessor. So far, it is only the two of them and a small goby in a 93 gallon cube.

That is difficult to predict. Assuming that your adult male is "fully male" and that your juveniles are female but not transitioning, your odds are pretty good. But these kind of questions have a lot of assumptions.

Paul, Whenever Daddy duty relents a bit I am up for road trippin :D.

I really don't want to take chances in my tank and add unknowns...I'd really like to find a couple of pairs and go from there. I do like the McCoskers for sure. I'll need to keep a close eye on LA DD and see what they have going on each day. As I recall many wrasses become more available in the spring, early summer. I am not sure this has anything to do with the fish, maybe more likely better collection and shipping conditions due to weather.
