I am back into reefing after 15 years off and have jumped back in by buying an entire large used setup. I have had to make some large changes, adding 4 new electrical circuits, reinforcing the floor, adding a large ventilation system, and others. The tank is in my den and backs up to the garage with a 12" gap behind the tank. All of my pumps, ballasts, and reactors are in the garage next to the common wall. How I envy those with a fish room. A fish room is the obvious way to go in retrospect, if you can do it,
I have water and live rock in the tank with all pumps going. I still need to finish the lighting as I have a lift system attached to the ceiling and I'm building an aluminum rack to mount the metal halide pendants and VHOs.
I have taken my time designing and building the system. I want to have an sps tank with mostly peaceful planktivores. No aggressive fish and a minimum of semi-aggressive fish. The only fish I kept from the original group is a 5" black tang. I have succumbed to wrasse fever and would like to get flasher wrasses, fairy wrasses, and perhaps some anthias.
What I need help with is coming up with a plan to pick the fish, determine the order in which they will be introduced, and how best to purchase/quarantine the fish. The species that I am interested in are:
Flashers McCoskers, blue/line spot, attenuated
Fairies Lineatus, Rhomboid, Labouti, and others
Anthias Evansi, Tuka
I know the anthias I have picked are not easy choices and I will probably have to try something easier or skip them altogether. The wrasses are the focus. I have read everything I can about these fish, but people who have raised these fish in an aquarium environment will have a better idea of which species seem to be more aggressive towards other planktivores. This tank will be a bright sps tank in addition to the fish, so I need to include adding corals in the sequence of adding items to the tank. I am patient and want to give my system the best chance of long term success.
My tank is 8x3x3 1" acrylic, the sump is 175gal, I have 1/4" screens for the 2 top openings, my refugium will be run as a pod factory, and I am setup for a heavy bioload.
I am excited to recreate an aquarium much like the one bradleyj has. This is my goal.
