Flashing of unknown etiology

Morning everyone,

Need some help with my 75g FOWLR. Current levels are: Temp 80.5, pH 8.2, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitate 5, phos 0, dKH 7.
Current setup includes: 3 inch sand bed, 60 lbs live rock, 1- 3 inch asfur angel, 1- 3 inch yellow tang, 1- 2 inch mystery wrasse, 1- 1 inch blue flasher wrasse, 1- 2 inch flame angel, and 2- occellaris clowns.

My issue started about Tuesday 6/10/08. The yellow tang was occassionally scratching or flashing againts the rocks. There are no obvious external signs of infection, ich, velvet, etc. I tested the water and all levels came up 0, except for nitrates at 25. I proceeded to do daily water changes to get to today's level of 5. Right now the all fish occasionally: scratch or flash but all have no external signs of infection, swim erradically (mystery wrasse swims circles like a dog chasing its tail), shake (open and close fins quickly and they shake their head repeatedly), and the asfur angel's fins seem to be lightening in color.

Thinking of the different symptoms out there, they DO NOT exhibit: labored breathing, lethargy, spots on the skin, breathing at the top of the water. All fish are eating and I have proceeded with supplementation of garlic, vita-chem, and selcon in efforts to possibly boost their immune system.

Could the issue be related to the water quality issues and nitrates being at 25? Can I attempt more water changes and hope for the best? Or should I suspect some sort of infection. My issues being what infection to treat for and my dilemna of only having a 10 gallon and 30 gallon tank for possible QT.

Any insight or plan of action would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Brian

My first though is flukes. You can't see them unless they are on the eye(s). The eye(s) will appear cloudy.

If you can catch one of the fish, do a freshwater dip (match Ph and temp as closely as possible). They will fall off the fish and you'll see them in the bottom of the container.

It could be something else - but sounds like classic fluke behavior to me.

If you can remove and treat in QT, Prazi Pro works well.

I recommend you do a search on flukes and see if this all fits your situation.
