Flea Bombing and the aquarium

DE or pool powder is the same thing as sevin dust that you buy for garden pest and is totally safe for people and pets. I live in florida and have used de powder for years and have zero fleas. The powder is so fine it acts like little razor blades and cuts up the fleas their eggs and the larva. I just take the dog out side rub in a bunch of powder brush him out and let run to shake off the loose powder poof no fleas. Just sprinkle in carpet rake it in with a carpet rake then vacuum out. Do this every 2 weeks for six weeks and you will break the life cycle. Plus de powder is cheap unless you buy the sevin dust brand name.

Hi xray,

I know DE powder is very effective when used like that but I just wanted to give out the caution that it can also have serious negative health effects if you breathe too much of that stuff. I believe they have warning labels on it now that says it can be carcinogenic at worse and often a serious lung irritant if inhaled. The same holds true for any super fine powder including fine powdered sugar (which can actually lead to health problems in chef's that use it all day every day). I'm not saying don't use DE, but definitely exercise good practice and try not to breathe that stuff in.

Cheers,

I have had to bomb my house two times. I have never lost a single fish. I did do it during war months though. What I did was shut everything down and then using duck tape and plastic drop cloth seal all the tanks. I then took everything that touches or ever might touch my tank and place it in plastic containers and moved those containers outside.

Tanks where sealed shutdown for about 4 hours each time.

I work at a veterinarian part time & with cats we don't tell people to bomb the house. Best thing that kills fleas is Advantage.

Vaccum your house thoroughly every day & empty the canister or change bags & walk it outside to your garbage can. If you empty the vacuum in the house all you have done is relocate the fleas & eggs to another place in the house instead of removing them. This is one of the easiest things to do & most veterinarns don't mention it. Probably because it's more profitable to sell a can of carpet spray :)

Fleas are more common now with milder winters. Before I started reefing I had 2 dogs get fleas in November. I think they got them from squirrels by the house because I wasn't taking them for walks in the forest preserve then.
